    Jo Qualifiers

Just a quick question to the crowd at large. This weekend was the local qualifier for the Jr Olympics. My son wants to fence in the national JR Olympics, so naturally he must fence here. At the close of sign up for the meet he was the only one in the event. So, he goes on to nationals with out ever fencing anyone. My question is on the meet fee. We $20 for the meet, never fenced, and walked away with out the entry fee. Is this correct to charge a fee for an event that never takes place?

B1: We've had the same experience, and here's my take, after several years of going to qualifiers:

We initially thought the same thing...if they didn't have any one else, why charge? True perhaps for a miscellaneous meet, but for the JO and Summer Nationals qualifiers, there's a little more at play.

There is paperwork to be filed with the USFA after the JO qualifiers...sometimes a lot. The club that held the meet may have had to pay for the space, the bout committee, the armorers and the directors. Even if only one fencer came for cadet sabre, they still had to have all those folks on hand.

Look on the bright side. You only paid $20, and your fencer got a guaranteed shot into the JO's. If three had been there, you potentially could have paid the $20, and if your fencer finished last, received nothing for the money.

I think this a good training experience!
Get used to paying tons of money for your kid now so when he gets into the big leagues, the vast sums of money required will not be quite so painful.

I'm afraid I disagree with the previous posters. First of all the Orange Coast Division is only $8.00, but that is because we're very efficient. It doesn't take that much to put in a name.

The policy for our division is if you fence you pay, if you don't fence but want a medal (which cost money), you pay.

For example we had a fencer trying to qualify for both Junior and Cadet. They were the only one in Cadet, so they were only charged for the Junior tournament, but was qualified for both.

We do the same here in Maryland (only our entries are $10).

I'd assume you'd have to pay. geeze, I have never been to a tournament in my division(New England) where there was oly one fencer, nevermind a national qualifer. Least I've ever seen is somehting around 12 for Y10sabre.

Why do y10 sabre fencers have to qualify to any national event? I mean previous to this season (and even so, it'll be only the regional youth circuits that qualify youth-10 fencers).

I think they have it just to let the kids fence. Dunno though.
