Personally, I just lift weights. It also helps that I fence with my non-dominant hand. :P

Yea, I have the same problem. In my forearm, there's about a half inch difference. I just ignore it. I don't see any problem with it. I am after all right handed and not ambidextrous. So, it's only natural to have a dominate hand. And it's not like my off side is weak; my dominate side is just stronger.

I've started to lift weights on the advice of our university's trainer to correct this problem in both my arms and legs. It's not for asthetics or anything. It was simply becoming difficult to find clothes that fit! Apparently there is also a danger that I will be more likely to pull my back muscles because of the power imbalance between the sides.

my arms are not the same either but i did not know that it could affect my back becasue of imbalance, wouldn't you have to have a very large difference to have to happen?

How exactly is this a "problem"?

Most people have a dominant side. If you're concerned about the strength/size difference do as cowpaste said, hit the weights. Eventually the weak side will catch up and it doesn't take too long...

A few weeks ago I saw an interesting variation on this: a young beginning fencer with one arm several inches longer than the other! Unfortunately (from a tactical sense) the longer one wasn't her weapon arm.

A few years back I also noticed the difference in size between my arms. I asked my coach and his advice was this "masturbate with your other hand"

Joking aside, the solutionb is to lift weights

I think the imbalance only comes to extremes when you can lift 40 with one hand and 10 on the other. some examples are tennis players. you can tell andy roddick's from a mile away. They often start hurting in the back because 1) they didn't stretch/warm-up 2) bad serving technique 3) stress. stress as in there's so much power jolts demanded that sometimes your back gets stressed from all the work. Something like sleeping in a chair with your head tilted to one side for several hours. But perhaps you need take good care of your back too just because of some bad posture you're doing.

    Lee Yue Yang,

Is Lee your last name or Yang is?

First off, don't worry about the difference in sizes betweeen your left and your right. Check comething else on your body and you'll notice they are not symmetrical.

If you've fenced as long as I have - I started fencing in 1965, you'll notice that your weapon hand's index finger as well as your middle finger do not lie flat when you put your hand on a table.

Why worry? If you play guitar, violin or any string instruments, you'll have caluses on the tip of your fingers. If you're a ballerina or whatever a man doing ballet is called, you'll have ugly, callused feet.

So, what of it? It's only skin deep. which would you prefer: give up fencing or have 'normal' looking arms, fingers, etc.

I presume you're of Chinese descent too. When I was in HK, I could not buy pants according to my waist-size. My butt's too big by HK Chinese standard. So are my legs and everything else... So what of it.

How old are you? As you get better in fencing, more addicted to it, you'll ignore these anomalies and enjoy your fencing.

    PK

I've got a sortlike problem... My left arm (non weapon) is also MUCH weaker then my right .. But that's kinda logical if you do everything with that arm... I mean: I play tennis and fence and am right handed so...

But I don't understand why having a longer weapon arm could be a problem...

Hi PK.Yes,I am Chinese.Actually, Yue Yang is my name and Lee is my surname. So if I were to write my name in the "western way", it would be something like Yue-Yang Lee.But people who have trouble with pronouncing my name just call me Lee.I am fourteen and only started fencing last year but I'm really addicted and getting better everytime I train.
Of course I would not give up fencing just to have "normal" limbs.Fencing is like the only sport that I am good at!
