    Best Films of the Season

It's Oscar season! Anyone want to cast their votes for best films of the season?

Of the ones that have already come out, I have to say I've enjoyed Master and Commander best. I'm looking forward to Peter Pan, Mona Lisa Smile, and Big Fish.

Master and Commander rocked it all. There are too few actors in the movies and this one got Russ and Bettany. Can't beat it.

I will say that I got chills watching the trailer for Hidalgo, though. That movie looks like it could very well be the PUMPKIN OF GOD'S WRATH. Wow.

Also, Return of the King can't be bad. Four hours long? You get your money's worth. That is gonna be good as well.

Bad movies? Elf disappointed me. Any others?

LOTR Return of the King gets my vote! Yes I know that it's not out yet, but that's a moot point. It will be the movie of the year!

Timeline was pretty good, and you know Revolutions is going to be up for something, just because it's the third Matrix.

My 2003 hits and misses list:

    HITS:
"Finding Nemo" - Just plain brilliant. I cried from laughter during the whale sequence.

"Bad Santa" - The most immoral movie I've ever seen. I believe Billy Bob Thorton's Santa wets himself twice. It's also very funny, but leave the kids at home.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" - This was just a fun swashbuckling movie with cool SFX, a cute love story, awesome character actors, and most importantly: Johnny Depp.

"Winged Migration" - This film was just plain neat. Yes, it's a documentary. About birds. Flying. But it's so freaking cool!

"Runaway Jury" - Generic legal thriller. One with John Cusack, Dustin Hoffman, and Gene Hackman, acting their guts out.

"Bend it Like Beckham" - I almost forgot this one! It's very very funny.

    MISSES:

"Radio" - This is what happens if you put Forest Gump in "Rudy". I would have preferred to stay at home and perform self-flagellation.

"Matrix: Revolutions" - Best religious comedy since "Dogma"! Longest death scene since "Titanic"! Dumbest protagonist ever!

"Cat in the Hat" - Do you really want to explain to the kids what a "ho" is? See this movie, and you can get that opportunity!

"Underworld" - When you're undead, you never have to reload. And it contains the best awful movie villain line since Timothy Irons' performance in "Dungeons & Dragons".

I think it'll be safe to add "Return of the King" to the first list. "Dances with Shoguns" will be either excellent or hecklingly awful, and while the previews for "Peter Pan" look great, I'm reserving judgement.

    darius,
    good comments.

Matrix - Revolution depicts some people in the US quite aptly: Oricle, "I believe." That makes it political/religious satire?

I look fwd to "The last Samurai". I won't pre-judge it till I see it. Too bad i missed the sneak preview last week. I was watching "Bad Santa".

Pirates of Carribbean - I envy Johnny Depp and the others: It's got to be illegal for them to be having so much fun AND GOT PAID LOTS OF MONEY!!!!

Master and Commander will win a few Oscars for technical stuff for sure. Ditto for The Last Samurai.

Bad Santa is hilarious but no Oscar material.

Honestly, I think "Return of the King" is going to run away with the technical Oscars. There's a great chance that it'll make a run at Best Picture, to reward the quality of the entire series.

I could see "Master & Commander" or "Dances with Shoguns" picking up stuff like set or costume design, but the technical statues should (deservedly) go to the LOTR.

Another film which I forgot, that was excellent: "Secondhand Lions"

The Human Stain. I'm betting at least ONE if not TWO Oscars in the acting category.

Master & Comander is my vote. The Deck-to-Deck fighting was sooo cool. I realy liked the historical realism of the whole thing.
