Yeah, it would be a real eye roller if all we were talking about was The George Foreman Grill, but I'm am not. There are "iMac" extension cords, and Irons, and lamps, kleenex boxes, photo albums, notebooks, and just about anything else you could name. In much the same way that the "rocket age" influenced design in the 50s (fins on cars, rocket shaped vacuum cleaners, etc.) you can see the way that Apple computer has influenced design over the past few years.
I am not as tuned in to product trends as I once was (I used to be the manager of a dept store) so I don't know if there is as much of it as there was a couple of years ago, but I can not think of any other product that has impacted american design like the iMac. | True. Prior to the iMac, every computer peripheral equipment (power bars, extension cords, external hard-drive shells, whatever) were different shades of beige, possibly stark white or black. None were translucent or purple or green. The iMac design really did influence industrial design quite significantly.
Maybe the new brushed aluminum look will catch on as well.

| Hrm... I must disagree. I VERY highly doubt that Apple is "taking Leon Paul's site."

Yes, Im REALLY sure that Apple is THE leading design force in america today, on all accounts. I mean hell, they made a colored iMac and now george foreman grills are colors! It's a revolution!

I'm not here to denounce reality and say Apple didn't influence anything, and any other similar design decisions were made in a vaccuum. Only that to say that Apple is The Most Influntial Design Force in america, is a gross overstatement. George foreman grills, computer peripherals, and well beyond that obviously. But unless you were being sarcastic...colored lame`s? I doubt apples work. They didn't invent color.

As for Apple being the "most influential design force in america," I stand behind that. Name ANY other force that has had a greater impact over the past few years. Name ANY other product that has insipred more imitators. Can you think of a time when a single brand has influenced the design elements in such a vast number of other products?
I mentioned earlier that it remeinds me of the way in which design was influence by the "space age" look in the fifties. (Vacuum cleaners shaped by rockets, and cars with fins, etc.)
But "the space age" was not a product it was an abstraction, the iMac was a single product, and its look influenced the look of thousands of other seemingly unrelated products.
The jelly tabs of Apple's website are based on the use of jelly buttons that are used in Mac OSX. And yet again, they seem to be influencing the designers. Web designers all over the internet are incorporating Jelly style elements into thier web pages. As someone else pointed out you can find tuturials on how to create Jelly tabs and jelly buttons online, and I am sure that many that are have never SEEN Apple's web site.
But ultimately, they are doing so because Apple did it first. |

| Well, I have another take on that... I would venture to say that most designers use apple computers to design with, so it's very probable that these designers are subliminally influenced by the way their computers and OS look.
