Glove Sizing

Greetings all!

I have an Uhlmann Champion glove and was wondering about how others "fit" their gloves...

When I was trying gloves on I was making sure I got a fit where the length of my fingers was accomodated as best as I could manage while still not getting a glove monstrously too large.

I have very long fingers and hence if I get a glove that fits the circumference of my hand measured around the knuckles (indicating a size 8 1/2) the fingers are very short and the webbing between each finger is about an inch too short...

So instead I get a size 10, and the fingers are just short of the webbing of the glove but their is ALOT of room in the glove and it feels on the verge of being inappropriately large...

As I have continued to fence I noted that it really isn't that important if the glove fingers are long enough as the forefinger, thumb are stationary as are the aides, and there is no real need to manipulate the fingers along their full length while gripping...

Was just curious if others have noted the same thing or if I am mistaken and it is more important to have full use of the fingers over their entire length while wearing the glove... I think it would just feel more "controlled" to feel like I was wearing a glove, and not a workman's glove

Feanor,

I can relate to the issue of the too long fingers. In general, it seems like anything that fits in the fingers is monsterously large in the hand. It bothers me a great deal in epee.

I've finally found something that works really well. The Fencing Post brand glove (3 weapon washable) actually has long enough fingers for me in a size 8!!

I've gone clear up to ~ a 10, which I could not fence with. I find it hard to fence, simply because I'm distraced by a too large glove, or by fingers that are too short. It just bothers me so much that I'm not thinking about my epee, but about my blasted glove instead. I can only conclude that being able to try on most equipment is a luxury.

I have long fingers as well but I haven't been troubled by the short fingers of the glove.

I know Santelli makes their own gloves. Perhaps you could get them to make a custom glove for you. More expensive, but having a good grip is important.

ps Post back if you look into this.

Another option is the American Fencers washable glove. I don't use them because the ones with the right finger length for me are too narrow (meaning they might fit your hand better). I know a number of people that use them and they hold up just as well as the Uhlmann, but are considerably cheaper.
