Which brand and type of blade?

Which brand of blade do select especially when you can afford the best, and why? With saber when is the Y type the best choice and when is the rectangular? Bear in mind price, safety, wear, grips and perfomance.

What selection do medalist fencers make? Blaise Freres or Chevalier d'auvergne or pbt or Allstar...?

Go with one of the FIE approved Allstar blades and you won't fail (unless your opponent is better than you ofcourse)

I've had much luck with the non-FIE allstar blades-I love 'em, and others from my club swear by Triplette and PBT blades also.
    But anything FIE is excellent.

The y-Beam is superb in all cases, the rectangle or I-beam deal I hate. lol. I get my blades from a Ukrainian coach now.

I find the rectangulars are useful for when your opponent makes a mediocre parry and you want to break through, if you use theside of the blade you have a shot at whipping over and getting the touch.
Theres nothing like a sabre in your hand to make you feel like dancing

There is no such thing as a FIE APPROVED sabre blade you dumbies only year 2000. The best blade for the money is the SG Blades from BG.
What you are paying for a ALLSTAR blade. You can buy three SG blades and they balance a heck of alot better then any sabre blade out. ALL SABRE BLADES BREAKS PERIOD.

Yes. You will pay a lot of money for the cachet of the Allstar name and for the current bad euro-to-dollar exchange rate, and wind up with a blade that in pure utilitarian terms is little if any better than the others out there.

I have not had any complaints about the rectangular-section blades, and have noticed no performance disadvantage vs the Y-section ones. But maybe that's just me---some swear there IS a difference and will use only the Y-sections. Prices are roughly comparable so until you know what works best for you you might as well get the latter.

I'm using the S+M ( heh heh ) blades at the moment, but I have no complaints even about the Chinese blades. Whatever is less expensive is what I'd get.

I'm thinking of getting some FIE epee blades. What do the different colors mean on the allstar ones? Is white more flexible than blue etc?
