| NCAA News: Penn State Open Women's Fencing Results STATE COLLEGE, Pa., November 23, 2003 – The Penn State women’s fencing team placed five fencers in the top eight of their respective weapons in the final day of the 31st Annual M. Garret Penn State Open at the White Building. Through the two-day tournament, the Nittany Lions posted 13 top-eight finishes, as the men registered eight yesterday.
Defending National Champion Katarzyna Trzopek (Warsaw, Poland) led the way for the Lions in the women’s epee. She blazed her way into the semifinals, but ran into trouble when she faced 2002 National Champion Kerry Walton of Notre Dame. Trzopek suffered a tough loss to Walton in a very close bout, but she bounced back to knock off Dora Lendvai of Rutgers in the third place bout. Freshman Katherine Cook (Setauket, N.J.) just missed the top ten with an 11th-place finish and sophomore Andrea Wine (Houston, Tex.) finished in 18th place in the women’s epee. Anna Garina of Wayne State claimed the women’s epee title.
In the women’s foil, Penn State accounted for half of the top eight positions in the final standings. Outstanding freshman Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.) recorded the best performance with a fourth-place finish, while junior co-captain Meredith Chin (Wynnewood, Pa.) was right behind in fifth place. Sophomore Annekathrin Donath (Tauber, Germany) fought through an illness to notch a sixth-place finish and junior Marta Grochal (Poznan, Poland) rounded out the top eight with an eighth-place effort. Rachel Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Tamara Najm (Morristown, N.J.) also fenced well for Penn State, finishing in 12th and 13th-place, respectively. Notre Dame’s two-time National Champion Aliczya Kryczalo earned the women’s foil crown.
Penn State was a bit shorthanded in the women’s saber, as Heather Brosnan (Portland, Ore.), Meredith Steyer (Topsfield, Mass.), and Laura Hillstrom (Gaithersburg, Md.) were all unable to compete. Senior Lindsey Clark (Clark, N.J.) registered a 20th-place finish to lead the Lions, while classmate Lavinia Lindsay (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished in 28th-place. Annika Eiremo of Penn took home the women’s saber crown.
Penn State head coach Emmanuil Kaidanov was quite happy with his team’s performance at the final tournament before the dual meet season begins. “Overall, it was a good tournament,” said Kaidanov. “We fulfilled our task as I expected. Now it’s clearer how to go on into the season. We’re looking with optimism to the upcoming dual meet season.”
The M. Garret Penn State Open honors former Penn State head coach Maxwell Garret, who initiated the event. The two-day tournament has become recognized as one of the premier fencing events in the nation. It annually features approximately 300 of the top collegiate fencing talent in the eastern United States.
Penn State will host its season-opening dual meet on Dec. 6 at the White Building. The Nittany Lions will battle defending National Champion Notre Dame, Duke, NYU, Rutgers, North Carolina, Princeton at the event.
