It seems like you have an interesting challenge on your hands!
That the novel is set in Yorkshire is close enough to home to catch my
interest, as I am based in Edinburgh.

Yorkshire's a reasonably big place.
If he's near Sheffield he could have probably ordered swords the equal of
any in the world.
I don't know when the Angelo school in London was open, but someone will,
it was probably the best fencing school in Europe...
However he'd have access to foils, and small swords, with no trouble.
These things were around and available just about everywhere.
Both would probably run rings around someone with an old rapier.
You can see all this stuff at the Royal Armouries collection at Leeds...
