Well, you seem to be missing the point. The extremely high day-of-event
registration fees are obviously designed to discourage you from deciding
you want to fence the day before and showing up on the day of the event
to register. Personally, I think this is reasonable, since it ultimately
allows the tournament organizers to put on a better event. In fact, I'd
be in favor of NO day-of-event registration.
In any case, you get to decide whether it's worth an extra $60 to wait
until the day of the event to register, or if saving $60 is worth
committing earlier.
However, if you were deciding you wanted to fence the night before
because you could not reasonably have found out about the tournament
until then, that's a problem. And, as I said, not letting people
register except online is not at all fair, nor is it fair to give people
anything but ample notice about the tournament and registration policies.
