I think that few lines summed it up for me at the time Jonathan. Yes, it
was quite some time ago - 20 years.
Part of the problem too, which probably is the same with all sports is
money. If only for travelling and competing. I spent many a night with a
sleeping bag on somebody's floor. When I appealed to my place of work if
they would consider sponsoring me for travelling expenses, I was told,
"When you're up there with the top ones, ask again." Yet to get their
among the top ones you need money to travel. You can have all the talent
in the world, but if you can't afford to travel to get to the
tournaments, you will never get "up there."

Re: Rreturning to fencing

There is particular issue for most fencers over the age of 30 (fencers seem to
peak about 27) and even more so for vets.
==========
Don't tell Johnny Moreau, who is 52 and just won our Division 1 epee national
championship this past summer!

And for my part, my best results came when I was in my mid- to late thirties. I
didn't earn my A in foil till I was 37, and I got my A in epee around the same
time. So don't give up, you creaky old guys!

Why don't you pull a Frank and go from "E" to "A" this year?
Others have done it why not you?

If you happen to know some old-timer English fencers, ask them how C. L.
deBeaumont used to keep himself in beer during competitions. He won the
British epee championships about 40 years apart, and could take a large coin
(about the size of a Canadian Twoonie) and rattle it down the wall with his
epee with his arm at full-entension. Then challenge the young bucks to do
the same. If any of them could do it more than three times without the coin
hitting the floor, he'd buy them all a beer, otherwise....

Of course, I also heard the story of him and the Swedish (?) ladies foil
team at the London Olympics after WW2.
