Shrinkage in FIE Certified Jackets/Knickers

I am looking to buy the Ulhman FIE Jacket/Knickers for one of the
fencers in my household. What has been the experience with shrinkage?
Last thing anyone wants to do is have $400 in equipment that becomes
too small to wear. I do read care lables and launder appropriately -
still....

My beloved Startex does not shrink but both my Uhlmann and Allstar FIE
underarms have shrunk a lot.

Don't worry, you're going to buy the best stuff around.....

My personal experience: I've an Allstar Startex uniform and doesn't shrink
at all. Even in the washing machine at 40°C......I use to wash it a lot....

I've experienced a lot of brands......they used to shrink a bit (the
Allstar/Ulhman Athen series, semi-elastic, as well), but You can sleep well
with the Startex. It's more expensive.....but it's worth all the money.
In Europe it's one of the best choices among top fencers. I also liked a
lot the "bankrupt" France Lame uniform.....really really good (unfortunatly
now, It's impossible to find it), and the Negrini one.

Why not fencer? Remember the motto of Veteran Fencers:

We have fun, but we do keep score.

Here is the advice I give all the parents in my club. Buy uniforms that you can
comfortably wear, then loan them to your kids.

Re: Shrinkage in FIE Certified Jackets/Knickers

I have been taking classes - but I have imposed two rules:
1. Do not buy knickers until I am ready to be humiliated in a competition.
Warmup pants work just fine for class.
2. Never fence either of my children....

Re: Shrinkage in FIE Certified Jackets/Knickers

If you ever want to fence your children, do it now. Later will be too
late. I started at age 42 when my son was 13, and thought, this is
neat, it's the only place in town I can beat up on my kids with steel
rods and not get arrested. Seven years later I have three kids fencing
and, more often than not, it's my ass that's taking the beating. Be
merciless whilst there's still time!!

I went with my daughter to a competition last year. First round of DE's, in a
field of about 50 fencers, and guess what - we ended up against each other. Go
figure.

But it turned out to be an extremely enjoyable bout. I didn't care much
whether I won or lost - either would have made me happy. (And the prize was to
go against a fencer in the next round who outclassed both of us, so there
wasn't much motivation there.) As a result of the lack of pressure, I did some
of my best fencing of the day in that bout, certainly the cleanest.

She beat me by a couple points, but it was great fun.

And that is what fencing should be about.

And how about fencers at a World Championship who wind up fencing a countryman,
or the Jacobson sisters fencing each other?
