[CFML] New member introduction

Hello everyone,

My name is Michael Heggen. I learned to fence in 1987 from Maestro
James Ciaramitaro, who studied under Maestro Charles Selberg. Maestro
Selberg studied under Maestros Eric Funke and Jack Nottingham (who
studied under Aldo Nadi), as well as with Maestros Hans Halberstadt
and George Pillar.

In 1999, I began teaching fencing on my own through the YMCA after
spending several years as a teaching assistant for Maestro
Ciaramitaro. In September, our program had grown sufficiently that we
were able to move into our own space off-site from the main YMCA. We
are now the proud occupants of Salem's first fencing studio -- just
big enough for three pistes. We welcome visitors, so if you're ever in
Salem, please drop in and fence with us (directions and hours on my
web site, below)!

We take a classical approach to foil here in Salem, emphasizing the
importance of fencing well above all else -- put simply, the art and
science of touching without being touched, and doing so in an elegant
and efficient manner. While we certainly enjoy competing, we do not
use electrical scoring apparatus to do so.

We hold three classical foil tournaments a year (fall, winter, and
spring). These tournaments serve as a testing ground for our students
to see how they are doing. Our tournaments are not USFA sanctioned.

Our upcoming winter tournament (January 24-25, 2004) will be an
invitational foil tournament. If your club or salle is located in the
Pacific Northwest and would be interested in competing in either
individual or team foil events at our January tournament, please send
me e-mail (off-list, please, to michael@heggen.net).

I would be especially interested in hearing from other classical
fencing groups in Oregon and southwest Washington.
