[CFML] CF reproduction foils

I am looking to find a supplier for foil parts to build up a late-19th
century foil based on a modern dry foil blade. The figure 8 guard is the
particular item that I have not had luck finding. I have a local saddle
maker who will make the leather for behind the guard, and I will wrap the
poignee myself. The pommel is also taken care of. If anyone knows of a
source for figure 8 brass guards to fit modern dry foil blades, please let
me know: engarde@mainefencer.com

Thanks in advance for any and all leads.

Best

RE: [CFML] CF reproduction foils

Patrick,

I have several antique foils with figure eight guards in my personal
collection.

To be more historically accurate I am planning to switch from using bell
guards to using figure eight guards in all my French Foil classes. I
have about 30 foils I will be converting over.

I will be taking apart two of my antique foils and making molds of their
guards to use to cast the new figure eight guards from. One of my
students is a sculptor and her husband, who is also one of my students,
is a mold maker. They have many years experience casting in bronze and
other metals. They are helping me with this project. If the casting goes
well I might be able to provide you with one.

Re: [CFML] CF reproduction foils

Actually... Some time back I picked up a thoroughly destroyed old foil
(blade missing half its length and rusted away; wooden grip half gone) for
$20.00 just to salvage the lunette guard.

My wife (a silversmith by trade) cleaned it up and made wax copies. These
she adjusted to accept a modern dry foil blade.

She used the adjusted wax mold to cast a sterling silver lunette guard with
a sterling silver back which she mounted on a dry foil as the grand prize at
a recent veterans' (sport) fencing tournament.

The silver back was engraved with "Grand Prize" and "Fete de Lune 2003"
(Fete de Lune being the name of our annual veteran's tournament, held at
NASA in conjunction with an event called the Ballunar Festival, celebrating
the history of manned flight... and, yes, there are LOTS of balloonists at
the Ballunar Festival.)

We still possess a number of wax lunettes and she does occasionally work in
brass, etc.

If you wish, I can have her contact you.

RE: [CFML] CF reproduction foils

Are Lunette's and Figure Eights the same thing ?

Figure Eight Guards have two big holes in them, hence the lack of hand
protection requires a leather pad.

Lunette's I thought were solid double claim shell guards ???
