| Blade condition How do you keep your blades in good condition? Is there a secret
that keeps this from being labor intensive?
Any suggestions? |

| One guy at our club wipes his blade after every practice, then gives it a light spray and wipe with a WD-40 type light oil in an aerosol can.
I've never seen his blades rusty. He also slides them into a rubbery electrical conduit tube for storage and transport.

| Rust adds character. And occasionally a stripe to your opponent's lame ( which also adds character ). |

I like my blades rusty. I do clean them up every once in a while, but not often. In the days of steam sabre, nobody cleaned their blades. We thought it made it harder for the opponent to see the blade if it was a nice red-brown.

| Keep your blades separate from your whites, especially after fencing (sweat = corrosion). That's all I do, and my blades generally don't get rusty. Every now and then (read: once or twice a year), I do get a few bworn spots, but that's usually after leaving the blades in the bag for extended periods.
If you're talking points, I clean mine and adjust them before and after every tournament (and sometimes during). Nothing like a smooth epee point, one that goes off if you just look at it hard. |

| Experimenting with shrink tubing instead of tip tape at the moment on foils... results look promising...
As for 'rustproofing'... My grandfather is a collector of antique guns... and he still fires them regularly... his secret? chansaw oil. Once every other week, I give them a quick rubbing with a few drops of the stuff and a dry cloth... I've never had a spot of rust, even when I left my gear in San Fran. for three weeks inadvertantly (humidity... eek!) you could tell my foils from my friends'.

| Vaseline works as well, and it doesn't react with the glue used to hold the wires in. |

| I think it's fun when I put a icky tshirt next to a blade, and the t-shirt gets this long rust stain on it that looks like blood. Good for shocking people

| One other advantage to rusty sabre blades--if you like to see sparks fly when you parry, rusty blades are a must.

| i have a triplette blade that i never have rust issues with, and two dinamo blades that are VERY prone to rusting. One of the other fencers on my team has one that is rusted all over, i just wipe the blades down before i use them, and when i'm done i put on a layer of 3-in-1 oil (same people as WD-40, but it doesn't have any solvents or stuff in it) keeps the blades looking like new

| They don't rust because they are FIE, not because they are coated. Maraging steel does not rust, Carbon steel rusts.
If it was only because of coating, they would get nicked up very quickly and then they would rust where they coating was nicked away.
I would also like to warn about using WD40 or any type of oil. If you talking Sabre that is one thing, but if you get the oil in your tip, you will have problems.
