The old weapons have blades that are hammered in place, as you can see, and to
remove the old blade, you have to file off the little mushroom head where the tang
comes through the pommel. If your weapon has seen a lot of service, then you'll
probably see file marks from earlier blade changes. On some foils, the end of the tang
was threaded, then stuck through the pommel (which was never threaded), and the
whole thing tightened with a small nut, and the tang hammerd down over that. In order
to change the guard, leather pad, handle, or pommel, you have to remove the blade, or
the pieces will be a bit loose. Since it is an old weapon, you may not want to do that just
to change the pad. Perhaps you cound improvise & attach it directly to the guard
instead.
One thing to be careful about--the handles on a lot of the old french weapons are
conspicuously longer than modern weapons. If this is the case, you will not be able to
find a new blade with a tang long enough to fit this handle. Of course you can use a
modern-sized grip instead.
Since you will not find blades like this again, you may want to reserve this item for
doing drills & very restrained fencing exercises.
In any case, tell us what happens.
Cheers,
J.
