The "many years of experience" aren't indispensible, either. I was once in a tournament where a fellow earned his C after having been fencing only a few months. The other people were mostly much more experienced, too.
Then you have the sort of thing that occurred in the Div II and III MS in Reno---where apparently either (a) fencers of A caliber live in such tough divisions that they can't get above a D in local tournaments, or (b) coaches are holding their students out of local competitions in the hopes that they can go to a Div II NAC as a D or E and demolish their way straight to a B. Because let me tell you, the top 8 at Reno were NOT Div II level fencers, whatever their nominal ratings. ( Max Williams only a C? Give me a break... ) Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Max Williams is also only 14 years old or so.
I'd say he's a strong C, maybe a weak B sabre fencer. -

Array Heh, I wouldn't call him a weak anything. But maybe it's just how I perceive him in relation to my own abilities... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Its really unfortunate that some Texans carry their foils/epees around like 6 shooters.
With egos the size of the Alamo battle field its often said (by non Texans) "If there'd been a back door to the Alamo there never would have been a Texas".
Yes, its true....all Texans are really 2 levels below their rating. The reason for this is similar to the inbred problem in Tenn. Texas have a big tournament shindig among themselves never including their real competition..(not even that competitive club downtown)so they never have to fence at a high competitive level. Its easy to get a good rating when theres only cannon fodder to beat. Its like the oscars.....a bunch of rich people giving each other awards.
Im sure we have some exceptions to this rule....and its these exceptions i like to bout.
It raises the wire for me.

Array Ratings really are not that big of a deal. I would say the most important rating to have is a D. After that, is points that you worry about.
It is points after all that get you on the list of folks that are permitted to overseas World Cups.
You can have an A rating in all three weapons and singlestick, but without a good rank on the NRPS you arent leaving this hemisphere. -

The first place in Reno's Division 2 Women's Saber is barely 12. A friend will bail you out of jail,
a true friend will help you hide the body...: ) Similar Threads -
