    Counting Calories

    Hello,

Does anyone have any idea how many calories you burn in an hour of fairly intense fencing? My workplace is sponsoring a contest to try to get people to burn 35,000 calories in 6 weeks.

    I have the answer!

    go to www.cyberdiet.com

In the left column, half way down in the neon green box there is a link called "activity calculator." In the activity column it has fencing listed. Enter your weight and the duration. This will give you the amount of calories.

For me, a 137lb person, for a duration of 60 mintues would burn 371 calories. I would have to fence 3 hours a day, 5 days a week just to be about 2,000 calories under the 35,000.

I am not sure about the accuracy of this page. I have been told for a long time by expert nutritionists that fencing was one of the more calorie burning exercises. It actually burns more calories than swimming, which is not what this page says.

On a side note, one of the most calorie burning sports is judo, as well as squash/racketball. Of course, that's assuming that you can sustain the same level of intensity of your exercise over a long period of time. What that means is that for loosing weight, fencing and racketball might not be the right sport, swimming might be.

I think that page takes into account the fact that you cannot sustain a high level of intensity in your fencing for a long period of time, so there must be some adjustments done behind the scene.

If you want to win your contest, Chris, I think the best would be to organize a fencing or racketball marathon over 2 days. You'd be set at the end of the session :-).

Let us know how it goes!
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

The Cyberdiet site will definitely help as a somewhat "official" guide I can refer to as "proof." Geez, this contest won't be easy. If I'm doing the math correctly, my current regimen of fencing, cycling, and weight training only gets me half-way there in the 6 weeks!

According to that site, they feel that fencing is only slightly more intense than mowing the lawn.

and hey, for some people that may be the case. I think it all depends on how much you put into your workout.

(but then this site claims you burn more callories sitting than you do having sex... Maybe I am doing something wrong?)
