Is This A black Card Offence

As you enjoyed my last post from the fencing forum how about
Is This a Black Card Offence?
Referee is refereeing a team match makes at least one obvious error. At the end of the match top official of the Fencing Federation storms on the piste demanding the referees I.D. saying he will never referee at the Olympics.
What should the referee have done?

Depends on the demeanor of the official.

On that note, I think you need another option:

    Ignore him.

Option A: Ignore the hot head.
Option B: Calmly explain that the official is abusing his position, exceeding the reach of his office, and behaving in a disrespectful, undignified, uncivilized manner, and ought to be ashamed of himself.
Option C: Reply that his situation demonstrates quite clearly that he SHOULD be an Olympic referee as he will keep just as cool under the pressure of coaches screaming at him when their national pride is on the line.
Option D: Tell the official to look up "disturbing the order of the strip," "unjustified appeal," and any other offenses that are cardable.
Option E: Card the guy, then proceed to option D.

If I know that I made a big mistake and get yelled at afterwards, I'll take my medicine. I'll tell the person to calm down and talk to me later though.

If the ref. was not too rattled, he might have calmly replied: " My ID is correctly recorded on the score sheet and is a matter of record. The bout committee can provide that information for you as well as the rules regarding any methods of appeal available to either fencer during the bout as well as the statutes pertaining to your behavior as a non-competitor which allow me to have you escorted from the venue. As a Federation official you should be well aware of the protocals involved. So, since there is media here, please let's not involve security" - then wave the the Black Card

Hell- if he's never gonna work again, might as well go out on the high ground!

I'm rather of the mind that many directors make mistakes. You hope they at least make them consistantly, and as seldome as possible. Sometimes, it comes down to a matter of opinion, or even, if you should throw something out. In many respects, a director is law unto himself.

Is it a black card offense? Well, as its after the bout (isn't it?), it becomes more of an issue between you and said highranking official, and is not card-related material (IMO). Not that I wouldn't mind smiling, handing him a black card, and walking away.

But I rather like both Artisan and Wizardly's thoughts.

    1. Since this is s'posedly a fictitious situation, I'll black card the bastard.
    2. I can't believe that someone who's a top official of the Fencing Federation will do such an undiplomatic and childish thing.
    3. As it's been said, every ref are allowed certain errors, espe. at the end of the day when he's been refing all day...

That said, i've seen the President of the FIE get up and asked the President d'jury to ask the fencers to pull up his socks...but that's not telling off the President d'jury but it's close.

    4. If this person really has that much clout over my fate as a ref, then all the more reason to black card him since I won't be working the Olympics as he said... The accused commits the crime.

No, I didn't vote to black card him in the poll.

You guys have to fight back; I would yell right into his face [if I were a man] - WHO the hell are you!! etc. Please get tough, get like the baseball guys who yell and spit tobacco juice, right in the middle of the ball field. I mean it, please, get rid of the black tie-champaigne glass sca, men in tights bs, and fight like men.

I'd have gone with the group 3 red card. Disturbing order off the the strip.

I too fell on the sword - but it seems like we should be able to stand there and fight back - just a bit - we can't get too 'weiner' about standing up for our rights!

Only 1 obvious mistake? Wow, that's pretty good. They should INVITE him to direct in the Olympics, instead.
Maybe, perhaps, likely, possibly, probably, potentially.

An event similar to the one described above occurred recently at a Junior Panamerican Fencing competition. The referee in cuestion gave a black card. I was not present, and I heard the events from a coach who is a friend of mine. The problem is that he is the coach of the fencer who won, so his view could be tainted. However, other people confirmed the events indicating that the demeanor of the black carded official merited the card. It was not just a civilized protest for the last call to a 14-14 bout.

I heard about something like this.. but there the fencer said it (in a very dirty way). On the World Champs, in La Havana, this year. Juhász Bence (HUN) said it. Then the others from the team. The Hungarian men's foil team was blackcarded...

Definitely black card the guy. Abuse is abuse, regardless of how powerful the threat can be. If you want to be a crooked judge, beg forgiveness from the all powerful FIE dude. If you want to do your job, and do it to the best of your ability, black card the guy no matter who they are.

Heck if the FIE is in the habit of employing crooked judges then you pick who you want to work for by your "ethical flexibility".

In this case, you should pick up a chair and throw it at the official before Jerry Springer's guards can mob you. If that doesn't work, get Geraldo to do it for you.
