    Fencing Chat

Wouldn't it be nice to have a fencing chatroom? Does anyone know any chatroom that's only for fencing? Or maybe someone can make one here...... What do you think? <img src="graemlins/evild.gif" border="0" alt="[Evil]" />

I've thought about this alot, and I've come to the conclusion that it would be really nice to have a fencing chatroom, but it wouldn't be good to have it on fencing.net. That's just my opinion, of course, but if there was a chat room on this site, it would take away from the forum. People would go in the chat room instead of posting messages, and you wouldn't be able to read what people have said and catch up on things you miss, you know? Someone should make a good one somewhere else, though.
    I haven't been able to find one, and I've looked... ... ...

No, a fencing chat room would be the pits. Because, anytime someone brought up a question about ROW, the "chat" would turn into a giant flame war that gets no where.

LOL, kind of like what's been going on in the foil fencing post.

Well there are many many chat services that are free that let you make channels on any topic you want. If ya want a fencing chat, pick one and advertise it to get people to come. Excite chat would probably work since you can do it web based and anyone on fencing net has web access.

I think that I'd stay with a post system. That allows you to spend more time articulating thoughts and ideas. Also, as it has been pointed out, that allows for ideas to stay in circulation longer.

Agreed. And one thing good about a fencing chatroom is that you can get an immdiate response about a topic. But in a fencing forum, you have to wait a day or so to get a few responses, <img src="graemlins/evild.gif" border="0" alt="[Evil]" />

IMHO a chatroom is good for folks on more or less the same time zones. those of us this side of the pond would not be able to chat to folks on that side. bb's like this one allows fencers from all over the world to communicate, exchange ideas etc.

Well what you could do is schedule it somehow. Like on a weekend on a day like Sunday where there aren't so many tournies and at a time where church might be over for the majority of people. That might work.

    Weekend should work, I think prolly most of us here are online for at least 10 hours on weekend =P Personally, I stay on for about 15 hours <img src="graemlins/freak4.gif" border="0" alt="[Freak2]" /> <img src="graemlins/fett.gif" border="0" alt="[The Fett]" /> <img src="graemlins/kane2.gif" border="0" alt="[Camo]" /> <img src="graemlins/evil3.gif" border="0" alt="[Evil 2]" /> <img src="graemlins/evild.gif" border="0" alt="[Evil]" />

I don't think timezones are a real issue, if someone wanted to talk to someone particular they could always work that out in email. I've been on several different chat systems. One of the better ones I used to go to would occasionally bring in guest speakers of different sorts of martial arts, and have a moderator fielding questions to them for a special event. That might be something that would work for fencing too.

    Mike-
Around here (New England, so New England division, Connecticut division, Northeast division, and Husdon-Berkshire division) tha (vast) majority of tournaments are held on Sundays.

There are enough people who are anal about checking this board several times a day (yes I'm one of them) that most questions tend to be answered within an hour or two anyway. Figure that way you'll have your answer before your next practice anyway and that's all that really matters.

I haven't bother to set up a newserver feed for the past several years, but before that I used to routinely be on rec.sport.fencing and that would get a response even faster if needed. I assume that hasn't changed.

I've been adding some fencer's aim s/n. And I often seen quite a few of them online at the same time, I think a fencing chatroom could work out. <img src="graemlins/evild.gif" border="0" alt="[Evil]" />

it could, but we would loose the archiving capabilities that allow people to learn things about fencing even if they weren't there in the first place.
