I have been a bit out of the sport fencing loop for several years,
but it is true that the IOC was considering dropping fencing for lack
of public interest. Fencing seemed to be one of those events that
didn't draw a whole lot of money (everything is about money these
days) or make good television. As far as I know its Olympic status
is still in jeopardy, though not immediately -- hence all of the
Fisher-Price looking fencing masks and talk about wireless scoring.
The FIE wants to make it more "user friendly." I'll leave the
commentary on this to others...
