Studying sport first?

How many of you studied sport fencing before taking up historical/classical? Do you feel it was a help, or was it actually more of a hindrance? If you could do it over again, would you study sport first, or just jump right in? For those of you who didn't study sport first, do you feel it was a major handicap?
