| Idiot's corner I know many people disagree with this particular stance, we've all been called idiots before, it's understandable, when one doesn't agree with another person, simply lob the old "idiot" phrase. But if we look more closely at the issues as they stand for several decades, we can say: What the heck does a fencer know about politics??" How can we be considered the worlds politcal answer box? But, the events which began well before September 11, 2001 can be traced to the lives of the Palestinian people who have lived in tents since losing their land.
Today, I met three young men from Indonesia, I spoke to one of them for a little while, they were interested in the issue of Soverenty here in Hawaii. I did my textbook talk about how Hawaii became a state, but it is difficult to address these complex issues with 20 year old kids whose parents don't even remember the events of WWII.
People want to "forget' these things, but is it really possible? Isn't it better perhaps to educate our kids in classrooms, and even invite controversial speakers to offer their viewpoints?
I leave this open for discussion, or for thought. Fencers like to think of themselves as intelligent, let's prove we are by acting accordingly.

| So what you're saying is Hawaii should become sovereign so the Palestinian's won't live in tents? |

| Al Gore didn't invent Hawaii, he started government funding for the creation of the islands.

| Re: Idiot's corner Octavia,
Hey there. You have a few different points of discussion here and you have left out a few of your steps of reasoning so that at least I am not sure what exactly you are asking about.
The following are my attempts to pull out some additional information so that there can be a discussion: Quote: |
I know many people disagree with this particular stance
| What particular stance? What theorem/position are you advancing that people are disagreeing with? Quote: |
| Well, I don't think that you are referring to the Indonesians who have no real reason to study Hawaiian sovreignity, so maybe you are referring to the knowledge imparted to the US school kids? Again, several connecting steps are missing, so I'm not sure what you're getting at. I'm also missing the jump from Palestine to Hawaii; are you attempting to bridge the two topics through an assertion that they both reflect a situation of invasion/occupation/displacement of one ethnic or politcal group by another? Quote: |
People want to "forget' these things, but is it really possible? Isn't it better perhaps to educate our kids in classrooms, and even invite controversial speakers to offer their viewpoints?
| Forget what things? Is this the payoff for the setup provided by the rest of the post? Are you really trying to start a discussion of the state of teaching of current events and US/World history in US schools? Or are you trying to start a discussion on Palestine?
Let me know what you want to discuss and how you want to frame that discussion and we'll have a much better starting point from which to venture forth.
Cheers,
Craig |

| I forgot the exact quotation, but it goes something like,
"He who ignores History is condemned to repeat it."
If someone knows the source of this quotation, pls let me know.
Oct,
in the world's scheme of things, Hawaii, when compared to Indonesia, is small potatoes.
Just in case you do not know, Indonesia is the largest Muslim country outside of the Mid East and they have major problems: what with their own seperatists: East Timor, et al as well as the country with the most number of islands... http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/...k/geos/id.html

| i try I sure ive done it but i try my best not to mix politics
and fencing. It would be interesting to know where fencers
stand on various issues compared to non fencers. You know, like a poll.I would
assume that there wouldnt be a difference really. After all
people are people no matter what they do for recreation and
sport. |

Living in tents is great, especially during basic training, when it rains every single afternoon/evening without fail, and you can count seventeen leaks in the tent just over your cot, because the tents are an old piece-of-crap style that nobody else in any branch of the military has used since Vietnam, including even the rest of the Academy - just us basic cadets get the privilege of living in these particular tents...

| If the palestinian's are still living in tents and unhappy about it maybe they should change their governmental leadership to a group that will be committed to making substantial improvements in their economic development.

Swordsman. Are you in one of the cabuls. I recently spent time in Doha Ku, then over the border. Before that I was in another on going engagement.
Good luck to you. Keep your head down. |
