| Duel In The Desert Picks...put your money down now! http://www.duelinthedesert.com/confentries.htm
I'm putting my money on Richard Glover to win both the open epee and the veteran epee, as it stands now.
Looks like Cynthia Glover is a walkover for women's foil and veteran foil, too.

To pose yet another question...
Who do you think will end up in the Sat. night finals... and who will win the big bucks? Once there are more entries of course.

No big bucks for her though as she's still a student. |

| The incumbents are:
Sean McClain in MxF
Cody Mattern in MxE
Dmitry Guy in MxS
Felicia Zimmermann in WF
Eileen Grench in WS
Anna Garina in WE
I predict only Felicia Zimmermann will repeat.
In mixed foil, I'm guessing Al Carter.
In mixed epee, Nicolas Sallembien.
In mixed sabre, Terrance Lasker.
In women's sabre, someone from Oregon
In women's epee, Elizabeth Spilman.
Pretty bold predictions, considering that it's not clear any of them will even attend.

(And I understand Grench is out quite awhile with an injury).
For Mixed Epee, Sallembien is a reasonable choice, however the competition is a day closer to New Years parties this year ... or what if he flies on Air France? :-)
Since Anna Garina is supposedly still living in country (Detroit ?), I'll pick her to repeat in WE. |

| Meghan's retired from fencing (isn't fencing for Stanfoo varsity, for example), so I doubt she'll even be in the running.

That being said, I will probably fly Air France... But I have made a "special arrangement" with them. Needless to say, I hope Cody isn't flying to Vegas with one of Air France's partner companies in the US... ;-)

| I heard that to take extra precaution, Cody is driving down to Vegas from Portland.
Unfortunately, it's in a Reneault.

| That's what I heard. I haven't seen her at Stanford since the start of the school year, and others have told me that she's done with fencing.
I also predict Marianne Kachikovyova (or however her name's spelled) for first in women's sabre.

| Not to blame anybody, but this seems to be a recurrent theme with Stanford Varsity Fencing members. A lot of them get good, finish their undergrad, and quit fencing altogether.
To name a few:
Nick Bravin
Monique De Bruin
Eric Tribbet
Graham Allen (still fencing a little, although not competitively)
Meghan Everett
David Lavalle
etc. etc... I'm sure some who fenced there before could add more names to the list.
Why such a large number of people who leave the sport? Seems to me that these people left fencing in their prime years, with a lot of good potential still untapped...

| Nick Bravin did continue with the sport after leaving Stanford. His attendance at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics were after graduating from Stanford.
Then, there's Tim Chang and Alex Wood, both of whom have continued with the sport. Same with Sean McClain and Felicia Zimmermann.
But yes, there's a lot who are more or less done. Greg (and Geoff) Donaker, Ken Jung, Cheech Pencavel, the Reichlings, the several women epeeists (forgot their names). There were several who came directly to Stanford and quite before they even started competing. Not great.
Stanford's men's sabre squad this year should be pretty decent: Pearlstein and Andrus. Women's sabre and epee are complete crapshoot. Epee will be Martin Lee and whoever they can dig up. Foil is Florian and Steve Gerberman (if he's not trying solely for the possible fourth spot on the O-team) or Mark Mulholland. Women's foil is Eva Petchnigg and some other, since Iris is taking the year off for trying out for the O-team.

| I just found a pretty good deal on United for less than $600 to go from Paris to SFO, and bought my ticket. I now need someone's place to crash at from the 12/31 until the 01/02 and from the 01/04 to the 01/05. If they plan on partying hard for New Year's eve, that's a bonus ;-).
I also need to get a flight from SFO to Vegas. I'll look at Jet Blue and other low cost airlines. If I play it carefully, I might be able to actually make some money out of this trip, provided I do fulfill edew's predictions (but we all know he sucks at doing those! ;-)
Anyway, Vegas, here I come!

| You need to fly in to Vegas on 1/1 because the events start on 1/2. 8AM for epee, as I recall. How much were flights from Paris to Las Vegas?

| I'd say EDEW can pick them fairly well. Ivan Lee higher than Keeth Smart at worlds. Who would have guessed that?

How much were flights from Paris to Las Vegas? | Flights from Paris to Vegas where in the $700 range, and that was if I wasn't flying in on a Friday, which meant I would have had to spend more on hotel rooms.
So if I understand correctly, I'll have to party in SF on the night from the 31st to the 1st, get back on a plane in the morning on the 1st, arrive in Vegas, sleep all day and night to recover from the time difference + alcohol abuse, and then fence on the next day... Sweet!
I guess I should ask the DiTD organiser to put in a special format for me next year: if you win all your pool bouts on saturday, you are automatically qualified for the tournament the next day. This would leave me an option to have some time to recuperate on sleep... if I do well enough in pools!
