| Good thinking Loch, Uni's not too bad a name!
I really do like the idea of one currancy, but it will take some time to do. Not just because we have to convince everyone that it's a good deal and such, but not to mention we have to settle on an amount. A Dollar here in the US is somethign entirely different in other countries. So we'd have to work out what numbers/ symbols to use etc. And that doesn't include Who or What goes on the bills. We have out presidents and such, other have their kings and queens and sultans you name it. Any suggestions on that bit?

| On the Euro, you have one side which is common on all the coins, and the other side is different depending on the country it was minted in. This is pretty nice because sometimes you get coins that travel quite a bit.
Often I will go through my change and check to see if I have any uncommon coins...

| Veeco, I meant that the dollar is the reserve and trade currency of choice. More business is transacted in it, more deposits are held in it, than any other. Even in the criminal world it's the preferred currency.
All that is probably going to change with the rise of the euro, but for the nonce the dollar is still the 600 pound gorilla of currencies. |

| Just to continue on Inquartata's post, it's also acceptable if you don't have the local currency. I haven't traveled that much outside the US, but I've never had a problem using US currency.
Now, if I have the local currency I use it. But stuff happens and you may be a bit short. I've never had anyone refuse to take the greenback.
Also, there are some countries that use the US currency as their own. Cambodia comes to mind, and I think there's one or two more out there. |

| My theory is they're trying to make our money look ugly so as to encourage us to use debit cards more. |

Hotels generally take the greenback, but at bad rates. In many shops (especially small ones) anything else than Sw. Kr would be flatly refused. In the recent Euro referendum, the drive to replace Kronor with Euro was soundly defeated (despite being supported by most of the elite), so many over here are fond of our own money. Also, there would be few opportunities for shop employees to take bucks and then use them personally - the control is too tight for that.
I think that similar stuff would apply for large parts of northen/western Europe, at least when you go to shops that do not especially cater to tourists.
Have a nice time!

| Peter--guess there always is an exception to the rule.
I guess it all depends on the exchange rate too. I haven't traveled to Europe but will keep that in mind if I ever do. Thanks. |

| The latest redesigns of the US notes are going to have the wording on them in Arabic, since most of them seem to be destined to go to Iraq. |

| Yes, but Peter, Sweden is a socialist paradise. Why would anyone need money at all there? |

| Here's the link to the Bank of Canada currency site.
Have you tried to make change in USD in semi-darkness? I know, I know, drug deals, right?
Going metric is another example...
Have you noticed that American cars are no longer "Imperial", no more cu. inches in engine displacement. No one said anything about it. It's just done because if the car makers want to sell overseas and use car parts made by the oversea subsidiaries they have to go metric.
Now, here's another American craziness:
NASCAR: Can you find a new American-made car that has a carburetor?

| Its rather funny, really. First time I ever saw colored bills was when I was in England and Wales. They looked like play money to me, and they were DIFFERENT SIZES????? Very strange.
So, one evening at the pub, I showed some friends what American currency looked like. "Wow, it looks like play money!" they all said. "Its all the SAME SIZE???" they asked. There's just no winning, I guess.
In the end, if it spends all the same, I'm ok with it looking "a little goofy." But now, I'm not sure how much longer we can talk about lining pockets with green, or some such. |
