| Phil lost to Jere in a veteran epee several weeks back. Dmitri hasn't been training much and his actions are a bit too big. Junior certainly is a favorite. I'm just expecting that he'll get too cocky and get too drunk the night before. But that might actually help his fencing.
Mummery, Lee, and Strumillo are more than reasonable picks.

| I'll go out on a limb and predict USA will claim the majority of medals at the Long Beach Invitational :-)
LUX has a very good chance at a medal in Mixed Foil and HUN has a reasonable chance in Epee though. Sadly the usual epee suspect from FRA isn't on the list. |

I guess in a state where stores advertise "Private sales, open to the public!" it might make sense :-) |

I guess in a state where stores advertise "Private sales, open to the public!" it might make sense :-) | There is a reason for the Invitational name. This precedes the Orange Coast Division. This year it turns 30 (Over the Hill). Originally this was hosted by Long Beach State and it was an Invitational Collegiate Tournament. Then the East Coast Teams did not feel the need to come out here and there wasn’t enough NCAA Teams on the West Coast and the University cut back on the money, so it was turned over to the Division as a money making for the Team.
By the way, it will not be the 3 Amigos in the Armory. It seems one of our number (Dan) decided to go to a small insignificant competition in Cuba. Actually he was drafted. So all of you will have to put up with Carl and me and a few hanger-ons.

| Ah that explains... It seemed like I saw someone looking like Dan peeking through the curtains during the individuals men's epee finals... Now I can safely say there's a good chance it is him!

| I'll agree with Junior for MS, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say Wilkerson in WS. For the rest I lift my palms and shrug... |

| I'll give Mare the benefit of the doubt if she can control herself and move away from fifteen consecutive head cuts. If she can make one jump forward, jump back, stop cut...just once, I might give her a chance. Has she improved any? She is working with a fairly respectable coach...

| Who's Wilkerson?
I haven't seen Sandra fence in a while, but if her ankle's better, and she's as on top of her game as she was last time I saw her fence, she should do well.
Junior should win mixed, I'll agree w/ that one.
Dimitri for men's foil if he's training at all right now, but Cedric and Alex will be tough ones to beat.
I think those are the only ones I can give an educated opinion on.

| Wilkerson is Mary Wilkerson. Short reddish hair. Loves to attack to the head.

| Results:
MF: Cedric Anen, beating Tim Chang
WF: Tammy Lee beating Laura Horton
MS: Jr beating Josh Runyon; Jesse Dogillo took third, earns B
WS: Westie beats Kuhn
ME: Kip Cox beats Keith Lichten, Jere Bothelio gets A, as does Bruce Vail and one other
WE: Janet Wertz beats Alex Mummery
I did well in pools, was seeded 5th (tied with Mark Mulholland), had to meet Tim Chang in the round of 16 because Tim didn't pull his weight in the pools and was seeded 11th.
Some factors: I had one bad call in a pool bout which put my indicators off for a solid fifth place seeding (hence me being tied with Mark). Were I seeded fifth, I would have moved quite easily into the final-8. Mark, however, in the fifth position managed to lose to Jamie Douraghy, who then lost to Torrey Burgess, who was then defeated by Anen.
That's why it's vitally important to have good referees in the pools. More so than in the DEs. You can be more forgiving in the DEs than the pools.
Anyway, a very well run event, with fairly strong competition throughout.

| One minor correction, Jr beat Bret Martin in the MS final, not Josh Runyan. Bret eliminated Josh in the previous bout.
I had a truly horrible day. Fenced horribly, that is, the tournament was its usual smoothly-run self. I won two whole bouts all day. Only bright spot was finally getting to fence Jr, the which I have long wished to do. Just not like that, exactly....
