| 2003 WC taping Hi!
I just taped the 1st installment of the Eurosport coverage. Airing time was 0:45 - 2:30 my local (CET) time, so I dozed off quite a bit.
Anyway, this covered ME ind, semis and final, WF final + maybe a semi (Donīt know - snoring by then)
There will be more coverage, watch this sport for reports on it and my commentary.
Have a nice time!

| I'm sure with Gruchala in the finals, Eurosport will show all of the semis and finals with Sylwia in it. Maybe even the other semi just for kicks. Unfortunately, we won't be able to see any action because I'm sure the camera would be either focussed on her butt or a close-up (probably through the mask even).

| I haven't seen the footage yet but there are suggestions that Mr Chambers has been particularly amusing this year. |

| What they showed in France was in ME the 2nd semi with Jeannet, a bit of the semi final with Zhakarov and Khvorost, and then the final with Khvorost and Jeannet. It seems like the 1st semi was interesting, a pity they didn't show it.
In WF, they showed all of the bouts from start to finish.
Commentators were Hughes Obry and Frederic Depla along with another guy. At the beginning it seems like Hughes was a little tired, but then when Gruchala started fencing, we kind of woke up and they Fred Delpla and him (they fence in the same club) started taking bets on who would win between Gruchala and Vezzali. Both Fred and the other guy were for Vezzali while Hughes made it clear that Gruchala was his favorite. IMO, they made the women's foil final pretty exciting, and gave some good commentaries. Gruchala also played a part in making this bout exciting, as she came back from behind 10-5 to 10, after which Vezzali seemed to up her game and keep the advantage.
Vezzali was clearly untouchable. Every time Gruchala found something to put her off balance, it seemed like Vezzali would find an answer and get her advantage back. It was a great bout.

| *sigh* I have yet to see either Gruchala or Vezzali fence. Suck is my life.

Anyhow, nice to hear that the women's foil final is interesting. Last year's WF finals was dull as uncooked white rice.

| It might be sooner that you expect. I have footage of the women's foil 2002 WC that I am editing for DVD, and soon I will also have the 2003 WC. Last weekend, I was in Houston. |

| Don't worry, that's the plan. I also now have a benchmark on how many to have produced so that there are no "inventory issues" right out of the gate. (I'm still working through Men's Epee backorders.)

I think Eurosport asked him to comment since he wasn't part of the team this year.
Also, since Fred Delpla, who's the usual commentator for Eurosport is Hughes clubmate, he probably asked him to come along and give some feedback on the current state of epee fencing in France since he was a part of the team. I don't think he will be commenting tonight, but he will be back for the men's epee team event.
I thought he was pretty good as a commentator.

| Craig and/or Eric,
Pls put me down for a tape/DVD of the finals of the 2003 WC.
Does anyone know if the Cuban are airing any of these via satellite?

| 2nd taping Hi!
I just taped the 2 installment from Havana. This night Eurosport showed MS ind (semis and final) and WE (1 point of one semi, full final). Airing started before the time on their website schedule, so I missed a bit of a MS semi. OTOH, the airing stopped quite a bite before the scheduled time also.
MS was done wireless, and in one semi Covaliu was wearing a visor mask while his opponent was using a ordinary mask. Did nothing whatsoever for face visibility in most views, his face - but not its expression - could be seen in the closeups. Dump the idea. Keeth was nowhere to be seen.
The commentator, Nils Koppang, has honed detachedness to a fine art. Imagine your average US baseball sportscaster being assigned to cover a 50 km ski race with only two competitors, a Swiss and a Japanese, and you will get an idea about how liveful his commentary is. Once he let slip and said zero in Norwegian rather than in Swedish (he is a former multiple Norwegian ME champ), but that is about it. His commentary is correct and contains a lot of info, geared both to the non-fencer and to those of us with several years of fencing under the belt. Commentary for the bookworm rather than for beer-swigging Biff, to put it short.
More to come next night. It is now 3:20 in the night, and I have a job to go to tomorrow morning. Fell asleep on the floor infront of the video sometime during MS final (video remote in on the blink) and woke up lying with the TV remote under my chin with the TV blaring TVSHOP ads for some corny abtrainer thing used by some Rush Limbaugh lookalike in spandex tights. Ugh.
Have a nice time!

| I've managed to get at least some of the men's saber--I haven't reviewed the full tape.
If someone is putting together a DVD of this, it would be great if it had NTSC and PAL coding--PAL has a lot better resolution than NTSC.

| Hey Peter,
As a dedicated F1 fan on the west Coast guess what time I get up to watch the European races: 4 a.m. - 7 a.m. in Central Canada [EDT]. But then that's on Friday, Sat and Sunday. So I know what you're talking about... but expect no symapthy from me, empathy maybe...
Eric/Craig,
I want the sabre tape!!!

What does the french tape have in terms of commercials? | I saw the commercial that Peter was talking about! It's actually an american commercial that's been redubbed. They must show it in all languages all over Europe...
In terms of commercials, I don't know. The first night I was watching closely and I actually stopped the tapping during commercials, and yesterday night I was in front of the computer while it was taping, so I may have missed the commercials time and they could be left on the tape.
