Array Forgive the moment of "editorial evil"....
Don't correct someone's spelling if you can't use bloody CAPITAL letters at the beginning of your sentences!!! AAAAGGGH!!! That drives me nuts!
Okay, back to your regularly scheduled PotC chat... "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

"There were a lot of long words in there miss. We aren't but humble pirates"
And in the subtitles they spell Parley with a y like that. So make of it what you will. You mean he WAS attacking me? -

"...I'm sure your family will come and ransome you."

Array What is parley?? I agree with chuck on the spelling. It is either -ez or -er so "to speak" or a conjugated form of the verb in second person plural, or formal. -
Parley is only derived from the french parler (to speak). Thus, the spelling has mutated to something more phonetic, which the common folk are more likely to be able to spell.

Array Re: parley? parlet? parleay? aarhg! Originally posted by chuckchew people, people, people, if you watched the deleted scenes in the movie you would know that when they say "parler" they are talking about the french verb meaning "to speak" so please spell it correctly it is acceptable to spell the word as:
Parlez
or
Parler
they are both pronounced the same.
i'mm sorry but that was irritating me.
my sister wants to be a circus performer (bearded lady) Parley is an anglicized variant of the french verb Parler (To Speak), and has been used since Norman times to signify a negotiation or discussion (usually between noble parties). That being said, there was (and is) a lot of nautical jargon that has been derived from other languages, that was adopted by the English seaman which has since worked it's way into our vocabulary.

Array "You've got to be the worst pirate I've ever heard of..."
-----"Ahhhh... but you HAVE heard of me!"
(Sadly, the first time I saw it, I saw the line coming a mile away... it made people around me nervous that it was the premiere and I preemptively spoke half the lines coming... Sadly, most of these are things I'd normally say to people) "The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is to parry, and riposte in return."
