Array Newbie Hello. I am new to the sport of fencing, and I want to learn all I can. If any of the more experienced people can give me tips, (I literally know NOTHING, but I am determined to learn) I would be VERY thankful! -

Array It would help to know in what part of the country you live in. Help in learning how to fence needs a coach or at least a club or college leisure course. Help on specifics like where to buy or what faux pas to avoid can be found here and visiting with other fencers. I'm sure some of the more experienced members can help you here Talen

Array I live in Massachusetts, and the only time I have been to Chicago for fencing, was a stop over at O"Hare on the way to Nationals. But this link may help you. Clubs-IL
This is from the United States Fencing Association, and gives all the registerered clubs in Illinois, hope it aids you in your search for a club. -

Array My best advice is to just follow the threads here... I know I've not been fencing terribly long, and a lot of this is new to me. Talk about a wealth of knowledge... (sometimes, I admit, about things we didn't need to know!!!)
But welcome to the board, and to the sport of fencing.

Array Arenkay, it all depends on how far you're wiling to travel. Best 2 clubs for Newbies are Naperville Fencing Club and Chicago Athletic association fencing club...might want to check those out. Theres nothing like a sabre in your hand to make you feel like dancing -
my advice to you is start with foil, it's the most balanced of the 3 weapons in my opinion, and if you want to later you can change from there. i think it's the best weapon to start on good luck in your search for a club -

Array Re: newbie Originally posted by arenkay I live in the south suburban chicago area. Where can I find a good club? As far as I know, there aren't any clubs on the south side of Chicago. The closest one is CAAFC, which is in downtown chicago. I went to CFC for a while, but it's pretty far north, so CAAFC is probably your best bet. - Bug
In my own experience, the period of greatest gain in knowledge and experience is the most difficult period in one's life. ...Through a difficult period, you can learn, you can develop inner strength, determination, and courage to face the problem. Who gives you this chance? Your enemy.

Array welcome arenkay,
i'm new to this forum, but have been fencing sabre for a long time...
just wanted to say hi and wish you all the best in learning this fantastic sport!
agree with the advice already given. do start slowly and weed out bad habits early, don't try for speed, breaking the moves down and executing slowly but perfectly will bring speed in its time! Similar Threads -
