Array Colors on Uniforms I've just recently returned to fencing at the young age of 41. Best of all, I've brought my wife along for the ride
Anyway, when I last fenced back in the 80's uniforms were all white (and touches were against you, not for!). I understand that colors are now allowed (sans all black for maestro) but I'm not sure of any details.
I rather like white (call me a traditionalist) but a little splash of color would look good. I'd like to run leg piping on my knickers and possibly down the arms, but I don't want to go through the sewing only to find that it's not allowed except under certain circumstances, or that only certain colors are allowed/reserved, or something else I'm not aware of.
Can anyone enlighten me? Talen

Array ok, this is a large argument on this board, and I usually ignore it. I'm somewhat ignorant, but I can tell you a few things.
First of all, you can BUY (ie- The Fencing Post) jacket and knickers with a stripe of colored fabric sewn in. Out old clup pres has black and blue down the sleeves and legs of his knickers. It actually looked pretty good. I'm not sure if you can sew it on yourself, but then again, as long as it doesn't breach saftey, why not?
USFA allows colored uniform, but states... I'm sorry, my computer isn't going to be able to load the rules and regulations up tonight, or it'll die, but something like "the body must be white or a solid light color." As in, no wild stripes on the body, but in theory, I guess you could have knickers and sleeves in all colors.
Oh, an addition: it actually might WELL be legal to sew on a band of ribbon etc down a leg or sleeve. Have you ever seen fencers from the UK with GBR ribbon? Its a woven ribbon of the British flag that you can buy by the yard and sew on down sleeves and legs of knickers. So why not? I wish we have US flag bands we could buy. -

Array This has been covered several times here, and will probably be covered several more.
The short answer is, go ahead. It's legal.
For the long answer, see the thread "Mask decals and decorations" in this forum, started by Wolfman140.
Good luck. Nothing is more frightening than ignorance in action. -
