    Fencing soundtrack

Does anyone take a personal stereo to competitions, and if so what do they listen to?

I find it very useful in blocking out a lot of the hurly-burly as I warm up, and also for changing my moods.

As I warm up, I'll listen to something upbeat, like Roy Ayers or Darren Emerson. In between poules, or at lunch, a little Neil Young or Radiohead helps me to chill. To get going again I'll listen to Sly and the Family Stone. If I need to get angry, The Stooges go on.

I quite like the idea of listening to music during a bout, and it's something I'm toying with as an aid to setting different footwork rhythms while practising. Does anybody do this?

For footwork, James Brown's "Super Bad" and " Get On the Good Foot" killer tempo for warm ups. pre-bout, anything by Queen or Stevie Nicks "Stand back"(that one really gets me going)Public enemy's " fight the power" is a good one if you like rap. cool down Tupac's "Aint mad at ya" this ones good if you lost a bout

No, I just hum to myself songs like "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie.

When i start off, like on the way to a tournament, i like to listen to something really heavy and needlessly hard. I prefer MetallicA. When i get to tournies, like when i'm warming up, i like to listen to Godsmack's "Stay Away from Me". I think its pretty appropriate. Then sometimes i'll go for Limp Bizkit or KoRn. If i need to relax, i'll listen to Crystal Method "Vegas" or The New Radicals "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed too". On the way home from the tournie? Ain't nuthin like something that is loud and fast. Fuel- by MetallicA. Its the perfect one.

I generally just hum or sing to myself. If I am doing well one can here the Flash Gordon soundtrak by Queen. If I feel I am doing poorly once can hear, "If I only had a brain" from teh wizard of OZ

I really like some classic Tannahil weavers, Silly Wizard and some Old blind dogs. Anything by Gordon Duncan or Wolfstone. If I feel rather ornery ,nothing beats Limp Biskit.

John Digweed is the perfect moodsetter for me.

I wear earphones at tournaments sometimes, but I'm not playing any music. I'm just grouchy and don't want to talk to anyone. My daughter suggested it - she says a number of her friends do that so people won't try to chat with them when they're pumped up for competition.

lately, indigo girls to tune out distractions; tchaikovsky's violin concerto in D, op 35 to focus and get fired up.

i do like peach's idea to wear headphones just to keep people from talking to you. have to try that sometime.

    Hey gang,

Speaking of music, any suggestions for a good piece to do a short theatrical fencing skit to? Something not too complex, yet dramatic... you know, sword-fightish

An idea of what my partner and I don't want... someone already suggested Popcorn.

    Cheers,

    Dragoneye.

I bring my RENT soundtrack with me. Our team could have a soundtrack for the songs we sing on the bus...when I get a CD burner, I'm going to put all the songs we sing onto a CD. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is our specialty- we sing it in 10 different keys at once. :-D

I had no idea so many of you guys were into Queen. I thought it was just a big poppa thing. Queen rules, music to kick *** by!

Steppenwolf and Styx all the way! Although I do like Limp Bizkit when I get a rather bad director.

    ummm How about
    Liszt, Mephisto Waltz, No.1 or
Paganini, Caprice No.24 in A Minor or
The completely inappropriate Closer by Nine inch Nails.

I go a little different on those rare occasions I bring a tape player to a tournament (mine's deal right now).

Usually, if I bring anything, it's a tape of one of the past Drum Corps International World Championships. The last time I did it was a couple of years back. I beliebe it was our Div I champs and to get my juices flowing I played one specific program...1984 Blue Devils. Why them? Because I was a member of that corps, and the memory of perfoming with a five time (now ten time) world champ just got me hyped!

    Dragoneye,

The Princess Bride soundtrack has some great music to fence to. In fact, the duel on the Cliffs of Insanity music is on there.

I love TPB for cool-down music, but Knopfler's stuff (movie compositions & Dire Straits) is just too damn mellow for in-between bout stuff...

I'm working on a U of R Fencing Jams CD (Apologies to Cornell's April Koich for the idea) for early-morning roadtrips. There are plenty of the popular culprits (MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This), as well as some rather clever things (Aerosmith's "Flech...", er..."Flesh.")
