| The Virginia Commonwealth Games are Virginia's amateur sports tournament held annually. I believe most states have some type of equivalent, although not all do. I'm in Florida now, and they have the Sunshine State Games. It's not just fencing: many sports (especially olympic sports) have tournaments involved in such state games, and they are usually held the same weekend spread out at different venues in the same metropolitan area. It's sort of an amateur Olympics at the state level (though it is usually geared towards youth sports). A great opportunity for athletes in different sports to check out fencing. Now that I think about it, there are also TV cameras there each year, although they usually only do an interview or two, and it's held in Roanoke, which is the middle of nowhere.
On another note: you can earn ratings in a team competition from nationals. I don't know how it works, but I know people who have earned ratings from it. |
