fencing suppliers

I'm just curious how everyone gets their fencing gear. In particular, who's your supplier? Why do you buy from them (quality of products, timliness, range of inventory, etc.)? Do they have a website?

Right now, I'm buying everything from Blue Guantlet, http://www.blue-gauntlet.com. I've been happy so far. I chose them initially because they offered Uhlmann gear, they have online ordering, and they are located on the east coast. I prefer only to order from the east coast because of my location the order will arrive MUCH faster (normal shipping gets to me in 2-3 days)

Rolls.

They and the Fencing Post were the top two sellers from the Fencing Net members. Out of 10 choices, those two got almost half of the votes.

I've ordered a few items from blue-gauntlet but I find that they screw up orders often. One foil i ordered came with a uninsulated left hand belgian when i had ordered a insulated german for the right hand. I also ordered two foil buzz boxes and the box just arrived today about two weeks overdue and found that they only sent one. I still like blue-gauntlet because of its cheap prices but its just annoying dealing with them.

I mostly buy from Blue Gauntlet. They have never screwed up any of my orders and their stuff arrives fast (just got six sabres I ordered Friday).

I recommend the fencing post for a stateside vendor. They have only ever made one mistake (they forgot a weapon in a large order) and they sent it out express, along with a free (uhlmann) body cord by way of apology! A great bunch of folks to deal with.

Blue Guantlet has screwed up everything they have ever touched for me, and have made several huge mistakes with orders for other members of my club. They are cheap, but IMHO you get what you pay for.

As for others, Triplette is good in the customer service department and some of there stuff is very good (lames, blades), but others items are a bit less than I would expect (uniforms, masks), and none of it is what I would call a bargain. Blade has decent stuff for decent prices, but the customer service is a bit shaky. I have never worked much with American Fencer or Santelli. Fence PBT has some good stuff, but their prices are such that I would rather go with the best (Uhlmann/All-star/Leon Paul) than pay what they charge as it is usually only a couple of dollars off, and I have never seen anything to justify their rather lofty opinion of their products.

FenceSmart, All-star USA, and Physical Chess are all part of the Blade Fencing umbrella/family in a rather complicated way that I do not understand, but of the three I like physical chess the best if you must order from a Northeast coast type vendor.

I hope all of that helps. If you are looking for specific things you should check out the reviews section. Many vendors have a couple of things they are really good on, for price or quality, and the rest is average. Check the reviews section before you buy and learn from other mistakes.

*please excuse any spelling errors. My computer died in the hurricane and I am just getting it back, so no spell checker yet!*

Good luck

I took the risk and ordered two epees with body cords from Fencing Equipment USA.

http://www.fencing-equipment.bizhosting.com/CATALOG.htm

What a nightmare. Don't do it.
They have no phone number that you can call, they only have a fax number and email address. They would not acknowledge my order for over a month, in-spite of the fact that I emailed and faxed repeatedly.
Finally they did respond, but I believe that may have something to do with the fact that I had put the Brooklyn NY address of the office of the New York Attourney General in the C.C. box on the fax.

My order finally arrived, but it was short one body cord. Also one of the epees was two inches shorter than the other.

They are not responding to my emails. And i don't hold out much hope that they ever will.
