This is a very interesting discussion. Perhaps I can throw something into
the kettle:
>In the simplest model possible, we should only consider the extension
>(extending) against an extension (extended) for comparative purposes. Then
>we have a touch against both fencers involved. This is where the question
>of modern versus classical, and their outlook on Right-of-way, should be
>discussed."
For comparison to all that has been discussed, I thought I'd bring up SCA
fencing, where we don't use Right-of-way at all. We count any hits that
were started before the target was disabled/killed (we don't award
points--People 'die' when hit, or lose use of the hit arm or leg). So in
the case above both fencers would be considered dead, and in a tournament
both would lose the bout. The only time the fight would be treated
differently would be in the last bout of a tournament between the last two
standing, when then they would have to fight again.
I'm not saying we do anything better or worse. Obviously our system allows
for silly things like trading an arm for a kill, but any system can be
jury-rigged to allow foolish things.
It seems to me that both sides of the discussion think that a 90% extension
before lunge, that completes before a touch, is perfectly valid. If so,
then both sport and classical fencing directors would award the point to the
same person, the one attacking first. That is, 90% of full extension
completed before lunging would seem to be the same thing as 'extended' by
classical standards, assuming the fencer who lunged finished the extension
before contacting his opponent. But it also sounds as if any less extension
would be considered a bent-arm attack by classical standards, and the point
would be awarded to the opponent. Personally I think that's funny, since
they'd both be gutted and neither should be given any points, but that's a
different discussion entirely . . ..
