| Fencing Website My school has a new website.
Bay Area Dueling Society
I was just wondering what other fencers thought of it.

| pros:
<ul><li>much better than most fencing webpages</li>
<li>relatively easy to navigate</li>
<li>lots of well-placed pictures, nicely visual</li></ul>
cons:
<ul><li>not css or xhtml designed </li>
<li>not valid 4.01 html transitional (declared in its doctype)</li>
<li>the embossing mouseover effect rubs me the wrong way</li>
<li>the second navigation line gets pretty dark, makes it a little difficult to see the navbar</li>
<li>the shadow effect on, like, everything gets a little old </li>
</ul>
those are my humble opinions coming from someone who knows a little on web design |

| Thanks for the input. Our school has really benefitted from having a website. I hope that in the future more quality fencing sites will appear.
I was extremely glad to see Product Reviews added to fencing.net. In fact, it's the reason that I started visiting fencing.net regularly. I'm a little dissappointed that I haven't seen more people posting reviews. But I must admit that I am as guilty as anyone else. I haven't sumbitted anything. I'm also disappointed that there are so many 1 star reviews. It seems to me that those are indicative more of a biased review than a faulty product.

| From a viewer not an expert....I like it.
The website was easy to load, read, and search.
Funny how I thought of the East Coast and the West Coast when I saw the words 'Bay Area'. And, I am from the South, . |

| Yeah. There's only one Bay Area, and that's not in the South. The Bay Area is the San Francisco Bay Area. Other states and areas have bays, to be sure, but there's only one Bay Area.
Maybe I should pull a cease-and-desist suit or something...

| It's good, you have:
1. good photos of your kids;
2. nice layout of articles;
3. good color choices
4. the buttons are easy to find.
Good luck with your new site! Web-on!

| I like the site. The site's goal is clear and the layout has the site looking clean and crisp.
I don't really like the rollover to the embossing effect. Rolling over to a different color or highlight may be more visually appealing.
Thanks also for your comments on the product reviews. I just need to get the left nav menu options reworked. (Too bad I can't find the original .psd's of the menu template!)
Cheers,

| Thanks for all the positive feedback and critisism.
In the last year our school has doubled in size. I wonder how much more it could grow but hopefully the trend will continue. In our area, fencing has not always been immediately accessible. It's kind of luxurious having a regular place to fence.

| I think we are all in agreement about the roll over embossing effect.
nice, short and sweet.....that is good.
I would add a LOT more pictures that show your facilities. It looks like you have a nice large facility. Most of us would kill to have such a nice facility to fence in. |

| Rolls,
Nice work.
But I think you're angling for constructive criticisms, so I'll oblige:
1. Do you have fencers wearing ALL-white? Look so much nicer.
2. Methinks the en-garde positions for epee and sabre could be better. But that's the shool of fencing I was taught.
3. The sabe target is about 2 inches too high. "The saber's target area consists of everything above the hips..." WRONG!
4. I have another theory about sabre's target:
If you kill off the opponant, his horse is yours. Hence you don't want to cut too low...
5. The sabre en-garde invites beat attack...hence could be improved. Oh, his stance is way too wide.
6. I just read the blurb about sabre, and I easily found 3 grammatical and speliing errors.
~...the "cvalry" sabre?
~"The saber's target area..."
Either, the article "The" is redundant, not needed.
Or, "The sabre target area..."
Your choice.
7. In the RoW section, 'credible' sounds better than 'creditable', but that's my personal preference but it appears you prefer that too since you used 'credible' later on.
I hope you don't think I'm nit-picking...
keep up the good work,
PK

| Wow, that's pretty impressive. I think when you build web pages it becomes really easy not to ever look at the text.
As for the target area on saber, I followed his jacket. He ussually likes to wear them as tight/small as possible to reduce target area. It probably could be drawn lower.
The grammatical mistakes... Yikes. I had so many people read over those, it's scary to think that they are still some in there.
Well, at least I have a project to work on this weekend, fixxing the flaws with the site. Uh oh, wait, I have a tournament this weekend. Well, I'll have to do it sometime.
Seriously, I appreciate all the remarks that everyone has made. They have been real helpful.

| Having pointed out the errors of your ways, may I offer this latest bit making the rounds on the internet:
"Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe."
But these are not grammatical errors...
Enjoy,

| pkt....that was awesome. I am a speed reader and that passage only slowed me a little.
Also, of a personal note....I need someone who is very picky on footwork to critique one if not both of our fencers. If we could make the 8 hour drive and find the money for a hotel overstay, would you be willing to give us some of your time? I tried to send a pm before but your box was full. Feel free to pm me though. |
