Array You didn't include Covaliu or montano in your poll?? "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"

They're included.... see 'other'

Array Since he's ranked #2 in the world, former world champion(I think?), I'd say covaliu is just as likely if not more so than anyone else on the list.
Ill stop nitpicking now tho "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"

Array Couvaliu won't make top-4. Maybe break top-8.
I'll go out on another limb here: Ivan Lee does better than Keeth Smart. -

Array I was very impressed with Couvaliu but not sure where he will end up at the WC. Might actually be better not to win this going into the Olympic year. Need to peak just at the right time. Hope Smart or someone else from the US can do that. -

Array I would agree in general that Ivan lee should do very well, especially considering his recent-ish rise on the international scene, but I don't think he'll do better than keeth.
Ivan lee...top 16 definetly. Top 8? maybe.. "Their interpretation is, however, refuted most elegantly by your system of radioactive atom + amplifier + charge of gun powder + cat in a box"

Array Considering that with "other" you get a lot more chances of being right than with the specific choices, that's how I'd bet... -

Array Edew, not to question your expertness, but why? Theres nothing like a sabre in your hand to make you feel like dancing -

Ivan lee...top 16 definetly. Top 8? maybe.. I would be surprised if Lee made top 16. Beating Covaliu once at a weak world cup does not mean that he can beat fencers Covaliu beats or even repeat his defeat of Covaliu. Lee i think will almost deffinitely make the 32 but is not going to make the 8. -

Array Covaliu has great traditional form -> superb footwork!. I would expect him to be in the hunt at the Worlds. At the NYC WC Medina beat him (to make top 4) by making some very risky si parries at the close of the best fenced match of the day. By the way I have this match on video tape. -

I'll go out on another limb here: Ivan Lee does better than Keeth Smart. As much as it pains me to say it, and I'm terribly disappointed at the outcome: he shoots, he scores! -

Array Here's the rationale, if there is any:
Ivan won the National Championships. Keeth lost going into the final-8.
It is really important to go into a major competition with a solid victory under one's belt. I don't think Keeth (or Ivan) had any competition, major or minor, since the Nationals. They're training, but in the back of one's mind is the "coulda woulda shoulda" that one can't shake until one actually goes and win one to shake off the "uldas".
If the NY folks were more concerned about winning, they should have weekly real competitions (not scrapped together impromptu ones) to prepare the fencers mentally. Can you win the big one? Put some "money" on the line (money in quotes because it doesn't actually need to be real money, just something that makes the event distinguished from your run-of-the-mill practice session at the club).
That's why people like Gruchala did so well: they're finishing the season with several strong wins. Wins, that is, not good finishes or better than expected finishes. -

Array Another telling factoid is that Ivan was at the Pan Am Games. Keeth was not. That was not a good idea by his coaches and/or the USFA. That should have been the warm-up event to let him coast into the World Championships. -

Array I think Montano will win... - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Array Let's look at it this way: of the four names on the poll, the one I chose is the only one left. Poz is out, Tarantula is out, Smart's done.
I did give Couvaliu the benefit to making top-8. Similar Threads -
