    Zelda's Adventures in Sydney

I forgot to post before I left, but over the weekend I fenced the AFF #3 circut in Sydney. Lets just say I am VERY happy with how I went, and the fencing gods are smiling. Results for all events can be found at http://www.ausfencingevents.org/2003sydney/ . Lets just say, only having lessons and not bouting obviously agrees with my competition preparation.

having the eventual winner in your poule was unlucky - well done

Downunder/Talyn, I was the one in the blue/grey/pink tracksuit at the medal presentation (ie the only one not wearing a Qld or Australian tracksuit). Was it one of you two who scored the trip to perth?
Thanks Marco/JEC, the pools were REALLY stuffed up. People who generally wipe the floor with others lost etc etc. I must admit when I saw the rankings after pools I actually exlaimed "Flipping heck", had everyone turn round to stare at me, which prompted me to go hide for 5 minutes.

    Hi!

Upon examining the DE results, I see that there were many blow-outs in the DE matches. An odd happenstance, or was there something special causing this? Care to elaborate?

Have a nice time, and congrats to you Zelda!

BTW: I went to a competition a few weeks ago, and there was a WE competitor there - Majella Clarke. Placed 27th out of 31. Heard about her?

Very nice work Zelda, I found your name in women's foil. Good work. Dont worry about being a feminist, more fencing. Again, nice work. My best results here were hidden. [bwouhahahahaahahahahahaha!]

People with your last name tend to do well, one of my toughest karate sparring partners was one of your kinsmen, he was sort of unstoppable.
The octopus was a symbol of the Early Roman Empire.

Epee is a weapon of deceit and guile. You tend to take your time and counter-attack. You can touch your opponent anywhere at any time.

Hey, it's kind of, er, laconic for an "adventure tale"! Where's the drama, the romance, the danger, the hairbreadth escapes, the purple prose describing same?

    Expatiation!

Geez, it's still very Caucasian in Oz, isn't it? I saw the 2 Yues (one of which may be non-Chinese), Quan in ME - as usual, his name was misposted; and TWO in WS.

    The vets are all Caucasians.

And all these years they ahve encouraged immigartion from Asia...

Peter: I really dont know what happened with regards to the poules and DE matches. It was a similar proposition in Mens epee. My mate who fences Mens epee has a theory that this is what happens when you stuff around the calender. Nationals are generally in sydney in around Nov/Dec and this competition is generally in Brisbane. However nationals are in Perth this year so the Brisbane competition moved to Sydney, thus everyone was confused!
PKT: There are alot of Asians who fence, they just dont compete.
Inq: I'm australian....larconic is an artform! However I can give you drama etc if you want it!
Pieree: I only beat JBM cause I didnt have to fence her! (Thank goodness!)

Must say the best touch of the day for me was something that I heard someone call later "The matrix riposte". My opponent flesched at me, I parried while stepping back and hit her as she went past me with a riposte and with the halt. It was allowed, much to my surprise! Someone asked why, and was told even though it was a very slow riposte it was one movement as she went past, hence it was allowed. Suited me!
The drama? Well I think it was the fact everything was running very late due to the building opening up late. Womens finals were supposed to be at about 2:30/3pm, we didnt start fencing them until about 4ish. I didnt leave the venue until after 5.
Overall though it was alot of fun and I'd do it again in an instant!

Pier, the local city DUMP beats Lidcombe most of the time. To make it worse we had to deal with the netballers outside on Saturday......icky, thank goodness I only had weapons check.

its a bit of a dump hey.

you would think they'd be able to find a better venue closer to Sydney..
