Array The thing you hate most about fencing! A follow-up to the last thread I started....
What do you HATE about fencing so much that you contemplate quitting (or is just me) ?
I cannot stand the f***ing politics. I guess it is par for any sport, but it is so discouraging! We get a new provincial coach almost annually because they can't stand the board members or other coaches and they wind up breaking their "5-year" contracts! How can I fence seriously if as soon I get used to and attached to a coach, they leave. I'm tired of starting form scratch year after year.
And thats just my province! Don't get me started on the corruption of the FIE and certain judges!
Ok, thats enough ranting for now.... Care to share your thoughts? -

Array Hate is a strong word. I certainly dislike some of the snootyness, but other than that, it's great!
I hate nothing about it. -

Array ah, having to practice all the time. but then again, that is also just laziness. it's not like basketball, where i can just pick it up every now and then and sink a whole ton of free throws...no, when i slack off, i pay the price. although, i do agree with you myrddinsprecinct, the expense is considerable. Array Dear first poster: I sympathize with you. The remedy is don't attach too much to your instructors, a litte attachment is okay, but not too much, let them take off or you'll get all weirded out.
What do I hate about fencing: only one thing, no make that two things: 1. carrying over 50 pounds of equipment around town; and 2. hooking my bodycords up to the reel, believe it or not, I consistently connect the wrong end to the reel. Turn around with a big smile, "ready" only to see that the wrong end is connected, then I have to un-connect and re-connect again. Whew! The octopus was a symbol of the Early Roman Empire.

Array I hate the way that I dream at night after 5 hours of class and club fencing... when I fence the same bout over and over and over all night long, but it never ends, and I wake up, and I never won! -

Array Top dislikes in Fencing
1) fencing is ridiculously expensive
2) Having practice end
3) Doing poorly for no known reason when I usually do so well, despite all efforts to turn it around
4) The REALLY long car rides to get to the rare tournies. -

Array I would say the price definitely bother me, and since I buy equipment in the US, STUPID ANNOYING VENDORS TRYING TO RIP ME OFF. God! I know it's nice to make a profit and all, but do you really have to sell equipment at 257120985712 times it's real cost? I'm a freaking college student!
Oh, the people that scream when they get points...they are annoying! AHHH! -

Array I am goin to go with money. Equiptment is pretty expensive and when you got from about 5'2" to 6' in two years you tend to blow a lot of money on regular clothing, let alone lames, jackets etc.
Plus money to go to NACs Nationals etc. -

Array 1) Those ruts in your fencing, when you never seem to do well.
2) The politics. I agree wholeheartedly on that one.
3) Not being taken seriously as a womens sabrist
4) Practice/especially competition ending.
5) Last but not least... SPORTS INJURIES. They're definitley evil.
but to counter that... here are some of the things I love most about fencing.
1) the kind of amazing feeling when you get that beautiful last touch to win the bout, and it's just amazingly happy and exciting. Hard to explain.
2) That clean, click-clack sound of a good parry reposte
3) The people! My clubmates are so supportive, and just a great group of friends.
4) Practicing, and then seeing results in competition
5) As my signature says, doing things and beating people when most people say it's not possible. -Sabresque

Array Hmmmmmmmm. The only thing I hate about fencing is that my coach isn't giving lessons right now and I;m losing my skills (forgeting them). In fact, I haven't had a lesson for about two months!
Oh no! I'm crying all over my keyboard!
Gotta go. -

Array I would have to say that the sport isn't all that widespread. For some, your choices of where and when u fence is limited. -

Gotta go. Really? I took about two and a half years off from fencing, and when I went back to visit my old club, picked up right where I'd left off. A little slower, probably, but not much worse other than that. -
Definately the politics,
15 years of fencing, I've actively stayed away from the politics at club and national level. Only to be found neck deep in it. How I got here I have no idea, but apperently those that hold the reins of power like to deal with me 'cos I don't give rat's patooie about the politics. I just want what's best for fencers in general and what's best for my club (which incidentally, I thought was my ability to coach). In Deum Veritas, In Deum Caritas -
