Array Breakthrough! A personal victory for me. I'm an older newbie (49) and have been fencing a whole 6 months now. I have been slowly gaining on the conditioning and working the drills but I rarely ever win a bout. Last night out of the blue I suddenly found myself judging distance correctly and scoring touches! I even won a match! Better yet I started scoring touches on some of the more advanced students who are much faster than I am. There is hope!!!!
Now, are there any particular drills or exercises designed to improve speed or is just a matter of "practice practice practice"? -

Array Well Morion I would like to challenge you to a match. Tijuana rules. -

Array This sounds like things must have clicked. I would concentrate on accuracy rather than speed in the beginning.
We have many veterans in our area, many have fenced 20 or 30 years, they are very good, not fast, but they know what they're doing and they've really helped the younger fencers learn the ropes of fencing. The octopus was a symbol of the Early Roman Empire.
Epee is a weapon of deceit and guile. You tend to take your time and counter-attack. You can touch your opponent anywhere at any time. -

Array (Foil) I remember my first "breakthrough." It was when I finally realized that after my blade was parried, I should immediate get ready to counter-parry a riposte, since I had lost right of way. There was no point in remising. It took me forever not to remise. Bleah. -

Array There is a point in remising, if you have enough time to slip it in and do the parry too its a one light action. -

Array It was fun to finally be able to retreat fast enough that my opponent couldn't hit me, funny to see them getting pissed off when I just retreat and do nothing when they attack...
Not the best thing to do, but it sure was fun~ A synonym is a word you use when you can't spell the word you first thought of. -

Not the best thing to do, but it sure was fun~ i love when people do that to me..all i do is fleche and they can't avoid the touch. -

Array Unfortunate the fleche is illegal in HS Fencing in SF then... -

Remember, to quote my fencing coach: "Old age and treachery" Don't try to keep up with the youngbloods, just outsmart them. (not very hard sometimes) -
