Array Interesting. My understanding is that it requires two seminars before one can take the exam. The seminar provider (I'm guessing it's Charlie Washburn) needs to keep track of who attended. Only after the second seminar is one allowed to take the exam. And I don't/didn't know that there should be a cost for taking the exam. I understand the fee is pretty much the same for seminars throughout the US: $50/seminar, but fee for the exam? -

Array Unless there is a new procedure not listed on the FOC web site: FOC website says:
Once you have gained some experience, you should make arrangements to attend a Referee Development Seminar in your area. Once you have completed the seminar, you may apply to the Fencing Officials Commission to be examined for a rating. You will be required to first pass the USFA Referee Written Examination. When you have passed the written exam with a score of 90% correct or better, you may apply to be given a practical examination by an FOC-approved examiner.
(FOC website ) It just says "a Referee Development Seminar." Are the seminars split into two when given at national events? It may be that this rather long session contains the content of both.
think we have three certified instructors in the division, so it may not be Charlie. The instructor isn't listed on the official printed schedule.
I don't see any guidelines for charges in the FOC site. -

Array I just took a class with George K as the instructor, and it was one day of seminar, take the tests, and then one day of practical at a tourney.
I'm curious though.... I passed my Saber test, and couldn't take the practical as there was no saber being fenced at the tourney we did the practical at. Will there be a Saber Practical at the event in Philly? -

Array No practical. This is just the book-larnin' part. They have to score the written tests before you can take the practical anyway, and they only have one day listed for this one so I suppose you won't know for a little while whether you passed the written. -

Array I'm pretty sure that Mark said it's Charlie. -

Array If it's Charlie Washburn, he's one of the best referees in the country and it's worth taking the course with him, if anyone here is considering it. -

Array Yeah, I'll get my guys to fly out to Philly just for this event... -
