| First time poster, fencing newbie! Thought I'd post for the first time - had my third fencing class last night, and so far, loving it! Far different than what I'm used to - I'm also a shinkendo practicioner (shameless plug www.shinkendo.com), so am not new to swords, but fencing is a big change in a lot of areas! Especially using lighter blades and going from 2 handed grip to 1 handed! Anyway, thought I'd say hey!

| Mike:
Welcome to the board and the sport! Which weapon are you learning?
I'll be the first to point out that, contrary to shinkedo, in recreational fencing, it's usually consider a fencing faux pas to pass your weapon entirely through your opponent.

| Learning Foil first - not sure which way I'd go from there - I thought sabre (with slashing as well as thrusting) might be closest to what I'm used to , but even that looks so different from Shinkendo that I'll look at all three (foil, epee, sabre) equally. World of difference - Shinkendo, we're usually two handed, weight a bit forward (maybe 60/40), and the torso is square to the opponent, rather than presenting a slim profile. I am encouraged though - the footwork isn't too different (except those lunges!) But with the lighter blades, I don't have the tip control and aim yet that I'm used to with a katana or wooden bokken! THAT's frustrating! |

| Welcome to the board! I have done some Shin Kendo myself while I was in Okinawa. I have played a bit now and then with local Kendo guys now that I am back in the states, and the good news is that a well timed balestra or a fleche while going for a Kote or a Man shot really catches most traditional Kendo fencers off guard. It can be very good cross-training, especially if you do a lot of work with distance parries.
Let me know if you pick up anything else that works really well in a Kendo/Fencing conversion, and I will add it to my dirty trick list!
Good luck!

A quick word of advice..... Read the Rules Book, and the Referees Manual as well even though you're not planning on becoming a referee soon!
They are both on this site somewhere!

You are not facing completely forward, but much more than in foil or epee, and there's a good deal of lean as well. |
