I couldn't find a reference in the rules to mending of tears, per se. In the section on equipment and clothing (Book 2 Material Rules), it says, "It must not be possible for the opponent to be obstructed or injured by the equipment, nor for the opponent's weapon to be caught up in or deflected by the equipment which, in consequence, must have neither buckles nor openings in which the opponent's point may be caught up--except accidentally--and thus held or deflected." I think the main thing is that the hole should be fixed in a way that a weapon can't catch on it or poke through it.

That might be different if you're fencing in a tournament where FIE uniforms are required. The repair may also have to meet the 800 Newton test. I don't know.

From personal experience, I had someone pop a 3-corner tear in my lame a while back. I just whip-stitched the edges together with a needle and thread. It still passes the conductivity test and no one has given me any trouble about it in the 3-4 tournaments I've been in since.

Had a small three cornered tear like Sabruese described, in my jacket and repaired it the same way. Have gone through several tournaments so far with no questions.

To arcon,
I've been noticing that you like to sign the end of your messages with some kind of name related to the topic, e.g. "arcon the tailor". Don't make me bust my foot up over yo as$.
