| I'll be different.
My nomination for worst band: "Blue Cheer". Their rendition of "I cant get no satisfaction" actually made my eardrums cringe the first time I heard it. heheh

| Lotsa good stuff here, although there are definitely a few people I'd say the jury is still out on, just because their greatest works are hopefully still ahead of them.
I tend to stay on the rock side of things, but most of the greats have been already mentioned. Here are a few that were perhaps forgotten, and should be explored. Note: this represents a very BROAD musical spectrum. You may love or hate, especially since I've included folks from the unholy hated genres (rap & country), but I've thrown in some justifications too.
James Brown - Hardest working man in showbiz, and one of the greatest entertainers, ever.
George Clinton & P Funk Allstars - Great great stuff.
Bob Marley & the Wailers - No more need be said.
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Even though he's 50, BrOOOce still plays 3 hour shows, which is a lot more hardcore than any tough-guy nu-metal. He also happens to be a damn fine guitar player (flanked by several other damn fine guitar players), and writes songs which capture the restless spirit of America.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - It was bold, it was loud, it was political. And it was damn catchy! What credibility did John Fogerty have? Absolutely none -- he was from Los Angeles. All that "boinin'" and "toinin'" nonsense, and the rest of America fell for it. Because it was good.
Robert Johnson - Sold his soul to be the best damn guitar player ever. And he was, for his time. If you can't handle screatchy recordings, or his scratchy, yelpy, high-pitched voice, that's fine...but you gotta pay respect where it's due.
BB King - King of the Blues. Where did rock originate from? Thank you.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - White boy plays blues? Don't tell anybody! If they hear that The Man can do it this good, they'll think they can rap, too! (I thought that was clever, but think harder -- when did SRV die? 1990. When did Vanilla Ice become popular?)
Megadeth - In the era of speed metal, Megadeth was musically far ahead of its competitors, and their (admittedly small) body of work from that timeframe shows that.
Dream Theater - Again on the metal side of things, DT combines interesting rock covers with unique instrumental pieces. Nearly every member of the band is a master of their instrument.
Now, let's get controversial...
Jonny Cash - The Man in Black. Great songwriter, and representative of all that's good in country music. The Nashville establishment secretly hates him, but they will drop his name any chance they get. Wonder why?
Steve Earle - I wonder if country music is actually more politically active than rock these days? With the jingoistic schlock on the airwaves ("Have you Forgotten?"), you could make a case for that. Fortunately, the other side of the coin is Steve Earle. His album Jerusalem is perhaps the most politically incisive thing I've ever heard, and yeah, I do like 60s protest music. He's a musically adventurous outlaw and a rebel, and Nashville openly hates him.
Eminem - Say what you want about white boyz rapping, but this guy is GOOD. His beats are interesting, he's clever, and most importantly, he gets parents' undies in a bunch. Just like the Rolling Stones did in the 60s and KISS did in the 70s.
Jurassic 5 - Oh, look...musically interesting rappers! Will wonders never cease?

Nevermind. I hadn't heard their second album.

| Jimi Hendrix is not a band, nor is BB King. They are the greatest guitar players of their time, or some would say ever, but they are not BANDS.
My votes:
The Beatles
Rush
Yes
(Carl had it right earlier up in the thread)
KISS
Aerosmith
(Just saw the concert in Detroit-AWESOME!) Well, maybe KISS has the best SHOW ever on stage, so that should go into a seperate catagory. If their music wasn't presented in the fashion that it is, I don't know if I'd like it as much. |

Though I bought the "clean" version of "The Eminem Show" by accident, which means half the album's words are "shweesh." Really sounds peculiar and a lot dirtier that way. I earned the bewildered enmity of a high school colleague by saying Eminem was a remarkable poet.
It is now confirmed. D'Artagnan is older than I am.
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Chumbawamba
My current favorite: Maroon 5

| The majority of both Hendrix and King's work is not solo -- it was played in a band. It would be very odd to hear either without a rhythm section, and by including them, you give well-deserved credit to the anonymous musicians who held down the beat.
No, they weren't bands in the bunch-of-friends-in-a-garage sort of way; there is a defacto leader. But that's formalizing a situation that exists pretty much everywhere: Guns & Roses was purely Axl & Slash, U2 is all about Bono and Edge, The Cure is Robert Smith, and the Beatles were John and Paul. Would anybody care about Velvet Underground if not for Lou Reed? Cream sans Clapton? Simon & Garfunkel without Simon? Van Halen without David Lee Roth?

LOL!!!! Nope, just nearly 23 with a mother who influenced me greatly as a child.
I could say a lot about the Rolling Stones and that sort vs. Eminem. I think the problem is that morals are decaying at a rapid rate. We think of the Rolling Stones as harmless now and detest Eminem. Will my kids think Eminem is harmless? What will be their version of Eminem?

| Black Eyed Peas is on my favorites list but except for "Where Is The Love?" and "Let's Get Retarded" it's just all right.

I once saw the CB in concert where the tuba player was performing an up-tempo solo of "Flight of the Bumblebee" and making a big deal of how hard it was to do on a tuba.
The lead trumpet player stopped the performance, reached backhand thru the Tuba plumbing and proceeded to do all the valve fingering--doubletime--while the Tuba player worked the mouthpiece. Absolutely incredible.
Let's see Steven Tyler try that!
Oh, Queen and the Moody Blues...that's entertainment.
