Array When he says it's not for everyone I'm pretty sure it's not meant to sound like he's saying 'well I don't like you, you can't join our club.' Simply the style and timeframe of writing isn't for everyone.
It's great fun though!!!! "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." - George S. Patton -

Array Dear Arcon,
The last time I started a story, people tried to kill me. Thank you. "her hot blood pounded in her ears as she strode willfully down the corridor to the room in which Arcon lie; the double, Zarcon appeared in the mirror and glared".

Array Okay, I'll give it a whirl - this time I know I'll get kILLED for sure!! But, one thing I forgot....Welcome back Arcon, Welcome back Mighty King. You don't have to offer personal protection trust me! I get into trouble of my own accord, but if it really gets bad, I'll hope someone jumps in to the rescue. The redecorating was done perfectly, not to worry. You must be a mind - reader. Get ready as Zelda"Gets ready to be fit to be tied"
Best regards,

Array Well Some watch other lives, and some read of others lives. While some live their lives. I prefer to be in the last group. -

Array just a whacky question KShan, this is for you: Are you by some chance insinuating that the people who write in Fantasy Land have no lives?
If so, that must mean that writers have no lives, because that section is essentially for writers. And if that is the case, then I can assure you that THIS writer (who has been doing so for 22 of her 30 years) has quite a life, thanks. The people who have enriching lives make the best writers (& authors, who are writers who have sold their writing), because life is what a writer draws from to create engaging tales for others. It can be said, then, that those who are NOT writers are the ones with "no lives." Either that or non-writers are just wannabes who are just too chicken to give it a try.
So, before anyone downs it...you might want to try it first.
On a similar note, many people have said that Fantasy Land shouldn't exist in a fencing forum. This is where I will come out & say, "You're wrong." Fencing takes a great deal of creativity & wonderful thinking skills. So does writing. When not on the strip or practicing, people need to be able to express that creativity to keep their mind sharp. I've noticed that most fencers enjoy fantasy/role play/etc. When people share common interests within a group, it's natural that other common interests come into play. So...this site is a perfect place for Fantasy Land. The two (writing & fencing) go hand in hand.
Disclaimer: This wasn't said with any malice toward anyone. I just figured that this was a good time for me to state how I felt. Everyone has their own opinions on the issue. I, for one, greatly thank Craig for giving us this opportunity. I just finished the novelization of the beginning of Arconia, now the main theme of Fantasy Land. Array Moon - Calm down. He was prodding arcon for executing the same 'slam' on people who chose to discuss a TV show on another thread.

Array Craig,
I will quote my original post & leave it at that:

That's it. Nothing more. I said it with absolutely NO anger, frustration, sadness, anxiety, etc. Note the happy face. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array arcon:
dont know
Ive only seen maybe ten minutes
of the show......ever.
Not much time for the tube.
Some watch other lives. Some live
their lives.
This is from the West Wing thread. I suggest you look at the thread to understand the comment. -

Array ok ok..........Ive been prodded. Its not really fair to pick on people who watch a modest amount of TV. So just maybe I slammed a
little hard there. Many people who take certain things to the extreme in Society get picked on. Ive known marriages to end because one person watched to much TV and the other party felt
ignored or taken for granted. Im sure some have even ended because one party "lived on the computer", so to speak. So i'll reword my opinion: "Some people do things in excess and dont
have a well balanced life - others manage their time and live all
life has to offer." Is that better? Im so glad to see that im still
capable of shaking things up. It makes for a more interesting
life. "moving water stays fresh, stagnant water stinks!
Moon, i thought youre opinion was well put. Strong but not flaming. Some can dish it out but have trouble taking it or hearing
it.

Array Well Moon i have a question...is Harry Potter a good book? How about Lord of the Rings, ven more, how about Beowulf? Because in my opinion they are. Yet, it seems impossible for Rowling, Tolken and medieval scaps to have "experienced" their subject material. i.e. a monster who lives in the 'fens'(Grendel) or Orks, or Ents. -

Array They have all are experienced in writing...the passion, the fantasty, the creativity that is involved...particularly writing in this genre.
Interestingly, when one creates a new world, character, etc. they are drawing from their own personal experiences. Yes, even in fantasy, writers can "write what they know."
And, unless I'm missing something, you didn't really hit on the point of what was said.
By the way, my honest opinion of the Harry Potter books is that they're good...but not great. I've read better. Not saying I didn't like them, but in this case the marketing did a lot more. On the other side of the coin, ANY book that gets kids (& adults) excited about reading is a very, very good book! "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."
