    Fencing in North Carolina

    Hi everyone, I was wondering if there were any fencers here from NC. I live on the coast in Morehead City, and the closest club I could find was the Salle of New Bern (about fifty minutes away). The travel time is fine, but I have not been able to reach anyone from that club to join. If anyone knows of any clubs in North Carolina that they would recommend for a beginning fencer, please reply. Thanks!

    Hi

    Im from North Carolina, except im on the other side of the state. Fencing is quite large in our division. Salle New Bern would probably be your best bet I have a good friend from thier. There is also CFFA in Wilmington. If you want more info go to our divisions website www.ncfencing.org
    Click on divisional info. then clubs, and you will get a list with contact info for all the NC clubs. I dont know of any other NC fencers on this forum but I do know most of the serious fencer in the state. Its a great sport to get into and your just in time, Summer nationals this coming year is being held in Charolette, NC! Mabey I will see you around at some tourneys this coming season.

    thanks a lot for the link. Do you know when the fencing season starts? On the Salle New Bern website, it says that classes begin in September, but no date is mentioned. Maybe you could ask your friend about it (or if the coach is checking his email, lol) if you get the opportunity. Again, thanks a lot!

    Hey! Although fencing is not HUGE in NC, it's a lot bigger than it was about 5 years ago. I'm from Charlotte, and I'm planning on being at Nationals.

    As for your situation, There really isn't a whole lot out in that direction. There used to be a small club out in Cape Hatteras, run by a guy named Chris. I went to a tourney out there a few years ago, but I don't even know if they still exist. Good luck!

    Wow, I can't belive that y'all still do that dry foil thing every year!!!!
    Cool.
    Smitt-
    As far as clubs go- you should check out and see if cumberland fencing is close enough. The coach there used to be one of those guys I always lost to (a nemisis I suppose) but is a great guy, and good fencer.

    Just wondering, my parents live just outside of Charlotte, NC, and I visit them fairly often. Are there clubs in Charlotte that would let a visiting fencer stop by and fence(for a floor fee of course)?
    Never *ever* take anyone for granted. Sure, you might have beaten them last time, but maybe, just maybe, they've been practicing;

    Hi all, I finally got a reply from the instructor at the Salle New Bern. Everything sounds great and classes begin on Monday, September 8. He said that all I needed to bring were my own "sneakers and glove." At the risk of sounding like a total newbie (hehe), what sort of sneakers and "glove" are good to have, and just how many gloves do I need (just one for my sword hand?)? Thanks a lot, once again!

    You need just one glove for your weapon hand. To start with, you could probably use a simple gardening glove, although most fencing vendors sell cheap fencing gloves in the $10-$20 range. Check out the reviews section of this site for some ideas: http://www.fencing101.com/reviews

    As far as sneakers, any cross-training/tennis shoes will do fine to start with. There are fencing specific shoes, but you don't really need them to begin with. Avoid running shoes as they are not too comfortable for fencing footwork.

    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial
