skin infection at a colorado fencing club? read article

U.S. Athletes Getting Superbug Skin Infections

Wow, read what says caused the possible outbreak. It should make clubs aware to sanitize shared equipment.

    Woohoo! Fencing in the news!

All kidding aside, I have to admit, I do not think about cleaning my body cords. I don't think I've ever belonged to a club where it was thought of.

So how do you sanitize fencing equipment? Bleach is destructive...

    Body cords are "sensing devices"?

Anyway, there's more proof of the superiority of sabre, we can wear our cords OUTSIDE our jackets, no skin contact to worry about!

Actually, I think this may have been a second outbreak at the unnamed Colorado club.

If you remember, the CO dept. of health was passing out questionaires about skin infections dating back to the 2002 Summer Nats in Greenville.

We know one of the persons involved, and it was a life-threatening situation, with hospitalization and massive anti-biotic therapy involved.

The real question is where did the infection come from in the first place? MRSA is not a common organism outside of hospitals, so it seems to suggest that whatever "unsanitary behaviour" was involved actually occured *prior* to the initial carrier using the body cord.

In other words, make sure you only share equipment with people who wash more than just occationally.

Our understanding (this from the person who contracted the bug) is that there was an individual at the club (who was a "carrier"--had the bug, but not the whole body infection) who was passing it along to the other people.

The bodycord is a new wrinkle, unless it was the vector for a new outbreak.

    TrojanMD,
Many of us are health care professionals, who are at higher probability of being carriers. I have a good excuse not to loan equipment.

I don't typically lend equipment out either, though not because I'm worried about spreading bugs. It's an interesting and very disturbing concept, though, and one I'll obviously have to be more aware of from now on.
