Chris Amberger has graciously sent me a copy of a French manual, published
in 1925, detailing drills in rapier and dagger fencing. It was written by
Georges Dubois, who was a famous exponent of the combat arts (savate,
boxing, self-defence, etc.), in collaboration with Maitre Albert Lacaze. The
booklet is about thirty pages long and includes textual references to
Thibault, Saint-Didier and Fabris as well as reproductions of plates from
Capo Ferro and Fabris. The bulk of the text consists of a series of
illustrated lessons in R&D fencing, using foils and curious
dagger-substitutes that may be cut-down epees.

I'd like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist in translating
portions of this booklet, which is written in modern French.

I'm sure that there is a connection between this manual and a 1927 newsreel
item featuring a French exhibition of rapier and dagger fencing. The latter
is available as a free download from BritishPathe.com, under the title
"Fence and Keep Fit."

Tony
