[CFML] Obscure Historical Info

Does anyone know who Camillo Agrippa’s fencing
instructor was? If so, what is the source of the
information?

Thanks.

Re: [CFML] Obscure Historical Info

Hi Bill--=20
I've checked three sources for info about who may have been Camillo Agrippa=
's Fencing Master ("Schools & Masters of Fence" - E. Castle, "The Sword & =
the Centuries" - A. Hutton, and "The Art & History of Armed Combat " -A. Wi=
se), and none of them specifically mentions Agrippa's teacher. He was a co=
ntemporary of Michaelangelo, he was a mathematician, engineer, and an archi=
tect, but oddly enough, he, himself, was a theorist when it came to Fencing=
, and not a Fencing teacher at all! (This is according to Wise's book...so=
mething I was very surprised to learn.) He lived and practiced about 17 ye=
ars after Marozzo, and apparently simplified the more complex system of Mar=
ozzo; e.g., he reduced the eleven guards of Marozzo to a more logical, simp=
lified four positions (again, according to Wise) Egerton Castle's book ind=
icates that he was indeed taught Fencing by some unnamed person. (It may e=
ven be possible that he was influenced by several teachers... back then var=
ious teachers were sought out to learn "secret bottes" and the like to give=
one an edge (no pun intended) for any impending combat situation, whether =
real or imagined.) Anyway, those are the only sources I have that address =
this portion of Agrippa's life. Perhaps someone else has a resource that c=
an add to it from here.

Re: [CFML] Obscure Historical Info

Hi.....

I've learned this about Aggrippa training.... quite right he was an
architect by trade.... he appearantly published three other books on
various topics in his time..... And he applied his theoretical mind to the
task at hand after using what he had been taught by what ever master[s] he
was taught by in a brawl and getting his butt whipped.

Now this I believe is conjecture on the part of Roger Siggs who is currently
translating Aggrippa's work on swordplay.... but of all the people to make
a good solid conjecture like that, I'd have to think Mr. Siggs is perhaps
the person farthest into his head.
