I would add to Kim's comments that the smallsword
is commonly held in tierce if one studies the French
school (the predominant European theory for
smallsword). There is also a British/Scots school of
smallsword fencing that advocates a hanging guard of
seconde (see "Hope's New Method of Fencing").
It would seem that the Italians never really gave
up their "espadas" with cup hilts and quillons, as may
be seen in classical Italian foil.
