    [CFML] re: Italian style epee

I trained Italian style and competed with Italian foil, and some epee=20
    long ago. You can find
non-electric Italian epees, but finding an electric one will be=20
    difficult (which may not matter
to you, of course). The grip is rarely seen now, even more so with epee=20
    than foil.

I would say that it's essentially the same as holding the Italian foil,=20
    except heavier.
Use the wrist-strap. Hard to describe how to hold it without a picture!=20
    Thumb on top/corner,
of handle between cross-bar and guard, index finger below, and big=20
    finger runs across cross-bar.
Whole assembly swings into palm of your hand, with most force from the=20
    above fingers.
I'd look for an old fencing text showing the foil's hand position.

It may be heresy to say it on this list (but I will), but the Italian=20
grip is essentially like using the
pistol grip but less comfortable. You can certainly use the Italian grip=20
    like a clumsy club just
as much as some people do with pistol grip. If you need a stronger grip=20
    than French grip provides,
just try out pistol grips till you find one that is comfortable for you.=20
    Personally, I train with French
grip but compete with pistol, precisely because I hate being disarmed :-)

    www.negrini.com

And it has online ordering. The weapons don't have true ricassos, but
as long as you alter the false ricasso to be a bit flatter and at the
right angle, the electric epee seems to be fine.

I suggest anyone wanting to do Italian gets a copy of Gaugler's
"Science of Fencing". you can get it from Amazon or various other
places, or try for inter-library loan. (I suspect interlibrary loan
is a better deal, the book is an obsessive categorisation of
everything and absolutely overwhelming. you don't need it...)

Plenty of pictures of how to handle the weapon and use it.

I think Nadi's "On Fencing" has some too.
