Hello,
This list has at times touched upon the Middle East and their methods of
swordsmanship:
David Laloum wrote on 12 June 2000:
The most likely source of manuals of Eastern European techniques would
probably be Turkey, as that culture kept and maintained a literate culture
with a formally trained Army using swords right through to the start of the
20th century. (How's your turkish?)
M° Andrea Lupo Sinclair wrote on 26 April 1999:
My master said that the sword & dagger Venetian style, had been very
influenced by Turks, and also that the Middleage falchion, had the same
origin from eastern styles. In Hungary were quite a lot used Venetian
"schiavonesca" sword, a straight broadsword, with a "S" crossbar.
I have a friend in the Reserves who is being transferred to active military
service and will be stationed in Bahrain. Does anyone know, or know someone
who might know, of any schools or instructors of classical (or even modern)
swordsmanship, Middle Eastern or Western, in Bahrain? Bharain does have a
pentathlon team (event includes modern fencing), so there is something
there... To top it off he presently practices a classical Japanese system
(Kasumi Shinto Ryu).
Any leads would be greatly appreciated,
Carl
